West Bengal Assembly polls 2026: States sees massive voter turnout of 92.47 pc

West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Manoj Agarwal on Wednesday said that voter turnout in the West Bengal Assembly polls 2026 reached a staggering 92.47 per cent (combined across two phases), hailing the large participation of people in the electoral process, the ANI reported.  According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), polling in Phase II stood at 91.66 per cent till 7:45 pm. In Phase I, held on April 23, voter turnout was 93.19 per cent, taking the combined figure to 92.47 per cent across both phases. Voting across 142 seats in eight districts Addressing a press conference, the CEO said that polling was conducted across 142 Assembly seats in eight districts: Kolkata South, Kolkata North, South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, Nadia, and Purba Bardhaman the news agency reported.  He added that there were 41,001 polling booths in total. Over 61 per cent of the 3.21 crore electors exercised their franchise till 1 pm in the second and final phase of polling in West Bengal amid attacks on a few candidates, even as tension gripped the Bhabanipur seat briefly as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Bharatiya Janata Party`s (BJP`s) Suvendu Adhikari took swipes at one another in the same booth area. Voters queued up from 7 am outside booths in Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, Nadia, North and South 24 Parganas, and Purba Bardhaman districts, which form Bengal`s electoral and political core. Of the total electorate eligible to vote in this phase, 1.57 crore are women, and 792 are third-gender, news agency PTI reported. Till 1 pm, West Bengal recorded 61.11 per cent polling with Purba Bardhaman registering the highest turnout at 66.8 per cent, followed by Hooghly at 64.57 per cent, and Nadia at 61.41 per cent.
