The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has registered a case to probe the recovery of 79 crude bombs in poll-bound West Bengal, officials said. The move on Sunday came following a directive by the Union Home Ministry in this regard, they said. In pursuance to the home ministry’s order, the anti-terror agency on Sunday registered a case, which was originally filed at Uttar Kashi police station, Bhangar division, Kolkata on Saturday, and took up the investigation, an NIA spokesperson said in a late-night statement. 30 additional companies of central forces likely to be deployed in Bengal ahead of second phase of polling | Kolkata News

Thirty additional companies of central forces are likely to be moved to West Bengal from Sikkim and Meghalaya ahead of the second phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls to be held on April 26. At present, there are 277 companies of central forces in the state. Three constituencies – Darjeeling, Balurghat and Raiganj – will go to polls in Bengal in the second phase of the election. For the third phase, scheduled on May 7 in four constituencies spread across the districts of Malda and Murshidabad – Maldaha Uttar, Maldaha Dakshin, Jangipur and Murshidabad – the Election Commission (EC) has reportedly sought another additional 100 companies from the Union Home Ministry. As per sources, this could mean that nearly 400 companies will be deployed in Bengal by then. According to the EC, 89 per cent of the polling booths in the state will be manned by central forces and the rest by the state armed police aided by CCTVs, webcasting, videography and micro-observers.
