The West Bengal government has initiated talks with the Tata Group to set up new industries and resolve a legal dispute over compensation of ₹765.78 crore that the previous government under the Trinamool Congress (TMC) did not pay to Tata Motors for losses suffered in aborting the Nano car project at Singur in 2008 following a two-year agitation by then-opposition leader Mamata Banerjee, officials aware of the matter said. “Efforts are being made to reach an out-of-court settlement with the Tata Group,” official said. The Andhra Pradesh forest department has intensified efforts to track and safely capture an elusive male Royal Bengal tiger named “Explorer”, which has been roaming across the Godavari region for the past six months and triggered panic among villagers following repeated livestock attacks, people familiar with the matter said. The tiger has been moving through dense forests, hilly terrain and agricultural plantations. An investigation into an extortion plan and the social media handle of a Jaish operative’s alleged girlfriend led the West Bengal Special Task Force to uncover an alleged plan to track chief minister Suvendu Adhikari’s movements for Pakistan-based criminals, officials have claimed. The accused has been identified as Mohammed Hamim Mondal, who was arrested from Purba Bardhaman district on Friday. (PTI) The West Bengal STF arrested the alleged Jaish-e-Mohammed operative who had planned to target Adhikari and also carry out sabotage at the recent students’ protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar in the guise of a police official, news agency PTI cited a senior officer of the unit as saying on Saturday. Waqf registrations rise by 35,000 in West Bengal after UMEED portal launch

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju speaks in Lok Sabha during the Monsoon session of Parliament, in New Delhi. | Photo Credit: ANI Kolkata  The Union Minority Affairs Ministry has informed Parliament that 1,15,551 Waqf properties in West Bengal have been validated and approved on the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development (UMEED) portal as of July 15, 2026, up from 80,548 properties reported in February 2025. A rise of around 35,000 registrations in a year.  “As on date 15.07.2026, a total of 1,33,417 waqf properties were initiated by the Board of Auqaf, West Bengal for uploading on the UMEED Central Portal–2025. Out of these, 1,15,551 waqf properties have been validated and approved by the approver, while 12,720 properties have been rejected during verification. Thus, the Board of Auqaf, West Bengal has complied with the extended statutory deadline,” an answer by the Minister of Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, said to a question raised by Bharatiya West Bengal State President Samik Bhattacharya.  The State Waqf Board already had 80,548 properties registered under them.  Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee opposed the Waqf Amendment Bill and said that she would protect the Waqf properties in the State. West Bengal Assembly passes Bill depriving panchayat pradhans of financial powers

The West Bengal Legislative Assembly on Saturday (July 26, 2026) passed the West Bengal Panchayat ( Second Amendment), 2026 Bill depriving elected representatives of panchayats of financial powers. The bill was passed with 169 votes polled in favour of the bill, while 13 MLAs voted against it. 32 MLAs did not participate in the voting process. The proposed legislation seeks to amend several provisions of the West Bengal Panchayat Act, 1973, with the stated objective of ensuring administrative stability, uninterrupted public service delivery and smoother functioning of rural local bodies. The statement of objects and reasons of the legislation says that the bill was brought to ensure the stability of panchayat bodies for the time bound delivery of services to the public at large. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Kolkata, said an upper-air cyclonic circulation over north Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh, along with an active monsoon trough, is likely to bring widespread rain across the state over the next four days. South Bengal prediction IMD has forecast very heavy rainfall (7–20 cm) at isolated places over East Midnapore, West Midnapore and South 24 Parganas on July 24 and July 26. Heavy rainfall (7–11 cm) is also likely over Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, Bankura, Purulia, and Jhargram on different days during the forecast period.
