Bhiwandi collapse: Misclassification delayed eviction, leading to 10 deaths

An administrative lapse in classifying a ‘dangerous’ structure let residents remain in a four-storey Bhiwandi building that later collapsed, killing 10 persons, civic sources said. As per PTI, a portion of the Kohinoor Building, comprising 48 rooms, 12 on each floor, in the Balaji Nagar area of Bhiwandi in Maharashtra’s Thane district, came crashing down on the night of July 30.  Three injured A senior official with the Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Corporation (BNCMC) on Sunday said the building was incorrectly classified by the local ward officer, which delayed the required safety actions. Furthermore, three people were injured.  As per PTI, the official list published on May 12, the building, located in civic ward 04, was listed under category ‘C2B’ (for structural repairs without eviction). Across the ward, 55 buildings were placed in ‘C-1’ (most dangerous/eviction required), 164 in ‘C2A’ (repairs requiring partial eviction), and 107 in the ‘C2B’ category. Number of patients in Bhiwandi food poisoning rises to 122

The number of persons affected due to a suspected food poisoning incident in Bhiwandi in Maharashtra’s Thane district has risen to 122, officials said on Saturday (June 20, 2026). Resident Deputy Collector Sandeep Mane told PTI that 107 patients have been admitted to the government-run Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) Hospital in the locality, while 15 others are undergoing treatment at other medical facilities. According to the police, several customers who had eaten food items at a local establishment on June 17 experienced stomachache and diarrhoea the following day and had to be rushed to hospitals. “The civic corporation is taking action against the establishment at its level,” Mane said. Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation PRO Shrikant Pardeshi told PTI that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has initiated action against the eatery. He said the civic body has also demolished the unauthorised portion of the establishment. The government hospital where the child was taken soon after the dog bite said he was administered anti-rabies vaccines along with tetanus injection. The boy, a resident of Bhiwandi, was bitten by a dog on January 10, after which his family rushed him to the state-run IGM Hospital in the area. He was later referred to Thane Civil Hospital and subsequently brought back to the Bhiwandi facility, from where he was discharged and taken home.
