Why Bhooth Bangla can’t recreate the Akshay Kumar-Priyadarshan magic sans Neeraj Vora | Bollywood News

Bhooth Bangla, Priyadarshan’s long-awaited reunion with Akshay Kumar, is a classic case of how one of Bollywood’s most successful director-actor pairs can’t get it right without their third musketeer, the writer. Neeraj Vora, who penned the screenplay and dialogues of most Akshay-Priyadarshan past hits, passed away in 2017. Vora, an actor, screenwriter, and filmmaker, was the co-architect of the comedy subgenre popularized by the actor-director duo. Their last collaboration was Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007), another horror comedy, which went on to spawn a franchise of its own, helmed by Anees Bazmee and starring Kartik Aaryan. Thus, comparisons with Bhooth Bangla was inevitable, given the narrative structure (first half is all comedy with a spattering of horror; second half is all horror with no laughs), the ensemble cast (Rajpal Yadav, Paresh Rawal, and Manoj Joshi were a part of Bhool Bhulaiyaa, while Tabu played a classical dancer in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2), and even the setting (both films were primarily shot at Chomu Palace, Jaipur). But after watching Bhooth Bangla, I’m happy to confirm it’s nowhere close to …

Writer Rohan Shankar is having a relaxing year after a hectic 2025 on the sets of Priyadarshan’s Bhooth Bangla and Haiwaan. “It was a lot of travel and constant movement,” he tells Hindustan Times in a chat. “2026 has been quite the opposite, in a good way. It’s been calmer and grounded after a year of chaos,” adds Rohan as he settles down for a chat about his writing career, his latest film Bhooth Bangla, its comparisons to Bhool Bhulaiyaa, and more. Rohan Shankar wrote the screenplay and dialogues of Akshay Kumar’s Bhooth Bangla. From graduating in Physics to writing for Priyadarshan Rohan says writing was more of an accident, as he wanted to pursue something creative after graduating in Physics. He tried to become a radio jockey, but a screenwriting course at an institute in Lokhandwala turned his life around. “I started writing while doing odd jobs across the direction, production and editing departments. My first break came with a Marathi film by Laxman Utekar. We later worked together in Luka Chuppi and Mimi,” …

I am well educated guy,” he had said. “Maybe he comes from a village and the people in the village are so innocent, they don’t understand. You should be able to discriminate between right people and wrong people. That is education in a very broad way,” Priyadarshan further …
