Union environment minister Bhupender Yadav on Wednesday said the upcoming Global Big Cat Summit, to be held by the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) on June 1–2, will adopt the Delhi Declaration on Big Cat Conservation, a unified global commitment to strengthen transboundary cooperation and protect big cats and their habitats. As a signatory to the Paris Agreement, it is a requirement that India issue an updated NDC in 2025, which spells out its voluntary actions towards transitioning away from using fossil fuel and improving energy efficiency use. As of November, over 100 countries have submitted an updated NDC that sets out the action they will take until 2035 and for several countries this translates into reductions in fossil fuel use. Desertification and poverty are linked and India is taking proactive measures to tackle land degradation recognising that it is not just an environmental but socio-economic issue, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said Monday. The minister was speaking at the 16th conference of parties held under the UN Convention to Combat Desertification in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. “India has transitioned from reactive drought response to proactive, sustainable strategies, centred on preparedness and prevention,” Yadav said. Nearly 200 countries are in Riyadh to discuss and enhance efforts to combat desertification, land degradation and droughts. Yadav said that India understands the importance of land, water, rainfall and effect of climate change on agriculture and livelihood. As a result, it has initiated several programmes to enhance resilience and recovery against land degradation, including issuance of soil health cards, to help farmers engage in sustainable agricultural practices, he said.
