FM Sitharaman embarks on Bhutan visit to deepen economic developmental ties

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday embarked on an official visit to Bhutan to further deepen economic and developmental cooperation between the neighbouring countries.  The visit of the Indian delegation from the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, is slated from October 30-November 2, according to an official statement. The visit underscores India’s enduring partnership with Bhutan, rooted in mutual respect, trust, and shared commitment to progress and prosperity in the region, it added. Finance Minister is scheduled to call on the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, and Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay. She will also hold a bilateral meeting with the Bhutan Finance Minister Lekey Dorji to discuss avenues for further strengthening India-Bhutan economic and financial cooperation. Bhutan will soon allow the use of cryptocurrencies in the tourism sector. The country has announced the launch of a crypto payment system that lets users make crypto payments using Binance Pay. The aim is to incentivise tourists with cheaper alternatives to dodge currency exchange rates and limitations in the acceptability of international cards. Tourism generates a major chunk of revenue for Bhutan, and the country is now looking to make it more economical for visitors and travellers. King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Mauritius foreign minister arrived in India on Saturday to attend former prime minister Manmohan Singh’s funeral in Delhi. Earlier, the mortal remains of the former PM reached Delhi’s Nighambodh Ghat crematorium for last rites.  Wangchuck laid a wreath on the mortal remains of Singh during his funeral at Nigambodh Ghat. Singh, who served as the prime minister from 2004 to 2014 and is widely known as the architect of India’s economic reforms, died on Thursday night. He was 92. India’s relations with several key countries, including Bhutan and Mauritius, saw significant upswing during Singh’s prime ministership. India and Bhutan pledged on Thursday to further enhance their “exemplary” partnership across all sectors, with Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi conveying  to Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck New Delhi`s strong commitment to the economic development of the Himalayan nation, news agency PTI reported.
