The passing of M.P. Parameswaran has drawn tributes from across Kerala’s political, scientific and cultural spectrum, with colleagues, friends and public figures remembering him as a rare intellectual who demystified science, championed rational thought and inspired generations through his writings and activism. A nuclear scientist by profession, Dr. Parameswaran evolved into one of Kerala’s most influential public intellectuals. Through the Kerala Sastra Sahithya Parishad (KSSP), he played a pivotal role in transforming the popular science movement into a mass campaign that took scientific temper and rational thinking beyond classrooms and laboratories to ordinary people, people recalled. 4 min readJun 29, 2026 04:12 PM IST Bullet train projects in India: The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has invited bids for the development of civil structure designs for the proposed Bengaluru-Chennai and Delhi-Varanasi bullet train corridors. The two corridors were announced in the Union Budget 2026-27 as part of the government’s next phase of high-speed rail expansion, alongside five other proposed routes: Mumbai-Pune, Pune-Hyderabad, Hyderabad-Bengaluru, Hyderabad-Chennai and Varanasi-Siliguri. DPR for bullet train corridors in India In a statement, NHSRCL said that Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for four of the seven high-speed rail corridors announced earlier have already been sanctioned, while surveys are currently underway for the remaining three corridors. The corporation added that alignment validation and pre-tender Geotechnical Investigation (GTI) works are also in progress. New Delhi, The Delhi Pollution Control Committee has floated a tender for the supply, installation, commissioning and 10-year operation and maintenance of 10 Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations across the capital. DPCC invites bids for installation, maintenance of 10 air quality monitoring stations in Delhi The project aims to strengthen Delhi’s air quality monitoring infrastructure through installation of at least 13 additional air quality monitoring stations this year. Out of these, 10 of them will function under DPCC. According to the tender document dated May 14, the selected bidder will be responsible not only for supply and installation of the stations but also for their operation and maintenance for a 10-year period from the date of commissioning. The scope of work includes daily reporting of ambient air quality data to the DPCC and the Central Pollution Control Board , along with online transfer and integration of data with government platforms. The stations will include analysers for gaseous pollutants, particulate matter monitors, meteorological instruments, calibration systems, display boards, UPS systems and other supporting infrastructure. Chess’s global governing body said in its statement that the match is provisionally scheduled between November 23 and December 17, 2026. FIDE further listed out the basic provisions of the match. The total duration of the event is projected to be 25 days, with regulations set to be approved by July 1, 2026. FIDE estimates a total budget of USD 8.5 million and a minimum prize fund of USD 2.5 million has been setup. “Payment for commercial, sponsorship, and broadcasting rights shall be specified in the bidders’ proposals,” it said. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has expressed its interest in hosting the 2038 Asian Games in a letter to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). The 2038 edition is the next available continental games whose hosting rights are up for grabs with the 2026 Games slated to be held in Aichi-Nagoya later this year, 2030 edition in Doha, and 2034 in Riyadh. As per a report in The Indian Express, the proposal to hand India the hosting rights was discussed at the OCA’s executive board meeting in Sanya, China on Thursday. An OCA team is expected to travel to India to assess the bid soon. Apart from India, South Korea and Mongolia are the other nations which have expressed their interest in hosting the 2038 Asian Games. India has hosted the Asian Games twice in 1951 and 1982. The 1951 Games were the first-ever edition of the continental competition.
