All you need to know about the 2026 Asian Weightlifting Championships in Gandhinagar

India is set to host the prestigious 2026 Asian Weightlifting Championships in Gandhinagar from May 12 to May 17, 2026, bringing together some of the biggest names in world weightlifting. India is hosting the Asian Weightlifting Championships for the first time in 44 years. The tournament was originally scheduled to be held from April 1 to 10 but was later rescheduled due to tensions in the Middle East and Gulf region. Around 260 athletes from nearly 30 countries are registered for the championship, making it one of the biggest continental weightlifting events in Asia this year. The competition also carries major significance as it contributes towards qualification pathways for the upcoming Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. India to host Asian Weightlifting C’ships after 44 years in April 2026

India will host the 2026 Asian Weightlifting Championships in April 2026 at Ahmedabad, the Asian Weightlifting Federation announced on Tuesday. Slated to be held from 1 April, 2026 to 10 April, 2026, it will mark the return of the continental competition to India after a gap of 44 years. India last hosted the event way back in 1982. This will also mark the first edition of the Asian Championships under the newly introduced weight classes of the sport, which will come into action from June 2025. The latest edition of the championships just finished earlier this month in Jiangshan, China, under the previous version of IWF weight classes, where a depleted two-member Indian team finished medal less. Nirupama Dubey (64 Kg) had the best result for India in Jiangshan, finishing fourth with a 206kg total (91kg + 115kg). Meanwhile, Dilbag (96 Kg) finished ninth with a 339kg total (147kg + 192kg). Bindyarani Devi betters Mirabai Chanu’s national record in 55kg snatch

Bindyarani Devi, on Friday, improved on the Mirabai Chanu’s snatch national record in women’s 55kg weightlifting at the 2025 National Games in Uttarakhand. Bindyarani, a silver medallist from the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, lifted 88kg in snatch to set a new national record. The 49kg Olympic medallist Chanu held the previous record with an 86kg lift in the event. Bindyarani was competing for Manipur at the National Games when she achieved the feat. It was indeed a special moment for the 26-year-old weightlifter, who grew up idolising Chanu. In fact, the Tokyo Olympics medallist had gifted Bindyarani with a pair of shoes when she was struggling financially to keep her in the sport. “She [Chanu] knew I did not have the money to buy the lifting shoes but she didn’t think twice before gifting me those shoes,” Bindyarani had said after winning her Commonwealth Games medal. Bindyarani Devi finishes 9th at World Weightlifting Championships

Commonwealth Games silver medallist Bindyarani Devi made a ninth-place finish in the women’s 55kg category at the IWF World Weightlifting Championships 2024 in Mahama, Bahrain on Sunday. Competing in Group B of the 55kg non-Olympic category, the 25-year-old lifted an accumulated weight of 195kg – 85kg in snatch and 110kg in clean and jerk. Her effort was 7kg short of her personal best (PB) of 202kg, which she attained at the Commonwealth Games in 2022. In the snatch event, she lifted 85kg in her second lift but failed to lift 88kg in her final attempt. In the clean and jerk segment, Bindyarani made a solid start by lifting 110kg. She attempted 114kg and 116kg in her next two attempts but failed to lift the bar-bell. As a result, the Indian weightlifter finished second in Group B. Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Mirabai will miss the tournament due to focus on rehabilitation. She last competed at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she finished fourth. Commonwealth silver medalist Bindya was competing in a non-Olympic weight class and lifted a total of 196kg (83kg+113kg) to claim the third spot on the podium. She won the silver medal in the clean and jerk category with a lift of 113 kg. Mirabai Chanu to return in action before Paris Olympics

Mirabai Chanu and Bindyarani Devi are the only two Indian weightlifters who will be taking part in the fourth edition of the IWF World Cup in Phuket, Thailand from 31st March to April 11. This is the final qualifying event for the Paris Olympics 2024, hence many top weightlifters across the world will be taking part to confirm their place in the race to Paris Rankings. India’s Mirabai Chanu is currently ranked second in R2P in women’s 49 Kg and almost secured her quota for the Olympics while Bindyarani is in 29th position in women’s 59 Kg and her chances of qualification for the Paris Olympics are very tough. Chanu will be making a comeback after a very long injury layoff, she will be treating this World Cup as a warm-up tournament and will gain some match practice before going in for the Paris Olympics to defend her silver medal from the last edition.
