Armed Forces eye biogas, solar to cut fuel use amid West Asia crisis | India News

India’s Armed Forces are exploring various measures to conserve Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and fuel amid the ongoing global energy crisis triggered by the Iran war — from procuring alternative cooking sources, preferably biogas in the short term, to exploiting solar and wind energy on a larger scale over the next few months, senior officials told The Indian Express. Orders to procure biogas stoves are in the pipeline and will be initiated soon by the Army, the officials said. With the focus on conserving fuel, it is also being discussed whether the movement of large Army convoys for administrative purposes can be restricted to 400 km, while maximising the use of the rail network beyond that. “Implementing limited restrictions on the routine movement of Army vehicles without affecting operational efficiency is being deliberated upon. This includes the pooling of vehicles and combining duties, such as the collection of rations, stores, and transportation of troops, wherever feasible. Furthermore, the use of CNG or electric civil hired transport will be encouraged where possible,” an official said. Officials …

HP temple uses langar waste for biogas

The Naina Devi Temple Trust has become the first Shakti Peeth in Himachal Pradesh to produce biogas from organic waste generated by its community kitchen or langar, officials said on Saturday. The temple, located in Himachal’s Bilaspur district, attracts a large number of devotees. By generating biogas from langar waste, it has earned the distinction of becoming the first such religious institution in the state to implement such an initiative, they said. Dharampal Chaudhary, chairman of the Shri Naina Devi Temple Trust and the local sub-divisional magistrate (SDM), said “The capacity of this biogas plant will be further expanded in the near future.”  The trust has installed a modern, pre-fabricated biogas plant equipped with solid waste management capabilities. The plant is now fully operational and the gas is being utilised directly in the temple kitchen to prepare Prasad and langar meals. Worried About LPG Shortage? Here’s How To Make Gas At Home And Get Paid By The Govt | India News

Last Updated:March 10, 2026, 20:51 IST Experts say biogas systems can be built at home at a relatively low cost and can significantly reduce dependence on LPG cylinders Although biogas pressure is lower than LPG, it is adequate for routine cooking tasks such as preparing tea, snacks and light meals. (AI Image) Concerns over a possible shortage of cooking gas cylinders have begun to worry households as the ongoing West Asia conflict involving US-Israel-Iran disrupted global energy supply chains. With LPG prices already rising and delivery delays feared in some regions, many households are exploring alternative fuel options. One solution that is drawing attention is the simple home biogas unit, which converts kitchen waste into usable cooking gas. Experts say biogas systems can be built at home at a relatively low cost and can significantly reduce dependence on LPG cylinders. A basic unit can be assembled for anywhere between Rs 500-Rs 5,000, depending on whether recycled materials are used. Apart from reducing cooking fuel expenses by more than 50%, such systems also address the growing …

Sakthi Surabi Biogas Plant Celebrates 25 Years Of Sustainable Energy

Last Updated: March 07, 2024, 14:12 IST Setting up the plant requires an initial investment of Rs. 28,000. Established by the Vivekananda Kendra, the Sakthi Surabi Biogas plant harnesses kitchen waste to produce cooking gas, effectively setting up over 100 such plants across Rameswaram. Biogas, a renewable energy source derived from organic matter breakdown, is gaining momentum for its environmental benefits. In Tamil Nadu’s Rameswaram Mangammal Chatram, the Shakti Surabi Biogas plant has been operational for 25 years, revolutionising kitchen waste management and reducing reliance on conventional gas cylinders. Established by the Vivekananda Kendra, the Sakthi Surabi Biogas plant harnesses kitchen waste to produce cooking gas, effectively setting up over 100 such plants across Rameswaram. Unlike previous attempts using cow and human waste, this innovative system focuses on vegetable scraps, old rice and fish, yielding significant success. With a capacity of 1 cubic meter, the biogas plant generates approximately 370 grams of LPG gas from every 1 kg of organic waste, offering substantial savings equivalent to three or four LPG cylinders per year. This initiative …
