Moshi garbage depot collapse: Death toll rises to 9, rescue ops end

Moshi garbage depot collapse: Death toll rises to 9, rescue ops end

The five-day rescue operation at the Moshi Garbage Depot has ended after rescuers recovered one more body from the debris on Sunday, taking the death toll to nine. The tragedy unfolded on July 8 when a massive garbage mound collapsed onto the administrative building of the Waste-to-Energy project at the landfill site. Fourteen people were rescued or escaped, while nine workers lost their lives. Officials said 23 people were inside or around the building when the collapse occurred. Five workers escaped immediately after the incident, while rescue teams pulled nine others out alive during the operation. The incident has triggered serious concerns over waste management practices, urban planning, environmental compliance and civic accountability in Pimpri-Chinchwad, one of India’s fastest-growing cities. Experts believe heavy monsoon rain destabilised the towering landfill, creating lateral pressure that caused the garbage mound to collapse onto the building. Waste management Engineers and members of the Pradhikaran Nagari Suraksha Kruti Society (PNSKS) have alleged that the disaster resulted from multiple violations of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. According to their preliminary …

Oppn. accuses Kochi Mayor of ‘abuse of power’ over extension of biomining agreement

The Opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) on Saturday (May 30, 2026) sought to corner Mayor V.K. Minimol, accusing her of ‘abuse of power’ by illegally extending the agreement with the company engaged in biomining legacy waste after the expiry of the original contract, without consulting the council. LDF parliamentary party leader V.A. Sreejith had written to the Corporation secretary on Friday (May 29, 2026) raising the matter. In his letter, he alleged that the decision taken at the council meeting on January 27 was erroneously recorded in the minutes. He pointed out that the decision to place the file before the council after the National Institute of Technology-Calicut (NIT-C) completed its survey to estimate the volume of legacy waste remaining to be biomined and after securing legal opinion had been violated. Raising the issue in the council, Mr. Sreejith registered the Opposition’s protest against the decision to extend the agreement with Bhumi Green Energy on March 13, 2026, after the expiry of its term, without consulting the council. “The renewed agreement must be scrapped,” he …

BMC floats Rs 2,368-crore tender for clearing Deonar landfill through biomining for Dharavi redevelopment | Mumbai News

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Wednesday floated a Rs 2,368-crore tender for cleaning waste piles from the Deonar landfill through biomining. The move comes ahead of the state government’s plans to relocate a section of Dharavi residents under its redevelopment project. Almost seven months ago, in October 2024, the state government allocated a 124-acre portion of the larger 311-acre Deonar landfill for constructing housing tenements for the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP), a joint venture of the Maharashtra government and Adani Group. In its tender document, civic officials mentioned that they will clear 110 hectares or 271 acres of land. “Alongside the portion that has been demarcated for the DRP, several other areas of the land parcel will also be cleared. This includes the portion of land parcel where a waste-to-energy (WTE) and a bio-CNG plants are coming up,” said a civic official.
