Coal mine blast in West Bengal`s Birbhum, four killed

Four people were killed and several others injured in a coal mine blast in West Bengal`s Birbhum district on Monday, police said. However, West Bengal Power Development Corporation Ltd (WBPDCL) claimed that five people lost their lives due to the blast in its mine. The incident happened around 10.30 am in Bhadulia block, a police officer said. “So far, we have recovered four bodies. Rescue operations are on,” he said. The explosion occurred when detonators were being transported for planned blasts at the Gangaramchak and Gangaramchak-Bhadulia coal mines, a WBPDCL official said. Local BJP MLA Anup Saha, who visited the spot, said, “At least five people have been killed and three others injured. Their condition was stated to be critical. A bench comprising Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and justices J.B. Pardiwla and Manoj Misra took note of the submissions of senior advocate Nidhesh Gupta, appearing for Mr. Dhar, that Monday is the last day for filing the nomination papers. “I will see the email (seeking urgent listing),” the CJI said when the senior lawyer said the plea needed to be heard today itself. The nomination papers of Mr. Dhar as a BJP candidate was cancelled after he failed to produce the ‘no dues certificate’. He had resigned as an IPS officer recently. No Coercive Action Against CBI Officers in Birbhum Custodial Death: HC to CID

The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the West Bengal CID not to take any coercive action against CBI officers named in a police case filed in connection with the custodial death of Lalan Sheikh, the main accused in the Rampurhat massacre. Allowing the CID to continue its probe on the FIR lodged by Lalan’s wife Reshma Bibi, Justice Jay Sengupta directed that the investigation, especially the recording of statements and seizures, be videographed. The court, on a prayer by the CBI, directed the CID not to take any coercive action against the central agency’s officers till further orders. Justice Sengupta also directed that no final report in the investigation will be submitted by the CID without the leave of this court. The court noted that the post-mortem report of Lalan’s body states “violent mechanical asphyxia” as the cause of the death. It also mentions ligature marks and bruises on the body. Sheikh was arrested from a hideout in Jharkhand’s Pakur, eight months after the massacre in which women and children were burnt alive. Lalon Sheikh’s body will now be taken for a post-mortem to Rampurhat Medical College and Hospital. Senior police officers from the district reached the CBI office after the incident. Sources told NDTV that the CBI has informed the local police that he has died by suicide while in their custody.
