File | Photo Credit: PTI The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday (June 10, 2026) granted interim protection to former Sports Minister and senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA from Tollygunge Aroop Biswas against any coercive action in the Lionel Messi event case. The case against Mr. Biswas was filed by organiser Satadru Datta, alleging extortion, cheating, and misuse of political influence. The event held in December 2025 at the Salt Lake stadium ended in massive chaos and vandalism, and led to major embarrassment for the ruling government on the international stage. This is the first incident of relief given by the High Court to any top TMC leader since the crackdown began on them after their massive electoral loss. Many top leaders have been jailed in the past month. Mr. Biswas had moved the court seeking protection against any coercive action after an FIR was filed against him. The arrest followed a complaint lodged by a victim, a make-up artist. According to the victim, who was jobless for the past two years, she came to Suruchi Sangha at New Alipore on August 20, 2025, to meet Swarup Biswas, who was heading a body of make-up artists, and his associates seeking a job. But Biswas demanded money in return. According to the complaint, the victim approached  Biswas again on April 4 this year, and this time, they told her that if she wanted a job, she had to sexually compromise with them. “When she refused their proposal, Biswas and his associates allegedly tried to kill her at her residence on April 10,” said a police officer. According to the sources, the three accused in the case – Biswajit Poddar alias Sona Pappu, former Kolkata deputy commissioner of police Shantanu Sinha Biswas, and businessman Joy Kamdar, all of whom are now in custody – allegedly operated a syndicate that used to intimidate senior citizens in Kolkata into selling their land below market value, and then developing those properties. As per the investigators, Sona Pappu used to intimidate the target, and then Sinha, through the local police, threatened the victim, forcing them to sell the property to Joy Kamdar at a lower price. Chandramouli Biswas, former bassist of the popular Bengali rock band Fossils died by suicide on Sunday. His body was found hanging from a rented house in Indian Mirror Street in Kolkata. He was 48 at the time of his demise. His friend Mehul was the first one to discover his body. He recalled the incident and said, “I hadn’t been able to reach Chandramouli on the phone since morning. The phone kept ringing, and I grew worried. Veteran actor Smriti Biswas, who worked in a number of Hindi, Marathi and Bengali films, has died at her residence in Maharashtra`s Nashik city, sources said on Thursday. Biswas, 100, breathed her last late Wednesday night following age-related issues, they said. A noted yesteryear actor, she was living in a one-room-kitchen rented flat in Nashik Road area here. She started her career as a child artist and featured in movies of notable filmmakers like Guru Dutt, V Shantaram, Mrinal Sen, Bimal Roy, BR Chopra and Raj Kapoor. Biswas co-starred with actors like Dev Anand, Kishore Kumar and Balraj Sahni in various films. She debuted in the world of films with the Bengali movie “Sandhya” (1930). “Model Girl” (1960) was her last Hindi film. Biswas had quit acting after marrying filmmaker S D Narang.
