A non-smoker, 23-year-old thought her tongue ulcer to be an accidental bite: It was oral cancer   | Health and Wellness News

A few months ago, I treated a 23-year-old college student from Delhi, who had never smoked or consumed tobacco, for oral cancer. She came to us with what appeared to be a small ulcer on the side of her tongue, something she believed had been caused by accidentally biting herself during a hurried meal. Since it caused only mild discomfort initially, she ignored it for nearly six weeks, assuming it would heal on its own. A biopsy confirmed what she least expected: early-stage cancer of the tongue. During consultation, we found out that her meals were irregular; she often skipped them because of academic pressures. She had replaced fresh fruits and balanced home-cooked food with packaged snacks, sugary beverages and long gaps without proper nutrition. Her lifestyle was no different from other urban young adults. She came to see us when the ulcer persisted, became painful, began interfering with her speech, and eventually prompted her to seek medical help. The difference early diagnosis can make Fortunately, because the disease was diagnosed at an early stage, …

Dog bite cases: Supreme Court warns states of heavy compensation

The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it will ask states to pay a “heavy compensation” for dog-bite incidents as it flagged its concern over the lack of implementation of norms on stray animals for the past five years. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and NV Anjaria said that even dog lovers and feeders will be held “responsible” and “accountable” for dog-bite incidents. “For every dog bite, death or injury caused to children or elderly, we are going to ask the state governments to pay heavy compensation, as they did not do anything on implementation of norms in the past five years. Also, responsibility and accountability will be fixed on those who are feeding these stray dogs. If you love these animals so much, then why don’t you take them to your house. Why should these dogs loiter around, bite and scare people?” Justice Nath said. Justice Mehta concurred with the views of Justice Nath and said, “Who should be held accountable when dogs attack a 9-year-old? The organisation that is feeding them? You …

SC warns states of ‘heavy compensation’ for every stray dog bite, death| India News

The Supreme Court on Tuesday observed that it may impose “heavy compensation” on states for every dog bite and every death caused by stray dogs, while also holding dog feeders accountable for attacks that result in serious or “lifelong” consequences. Questioning why stray dogs should be allowed to roam freely in all areas, the court remarked that those feeding them should instead take responsibility by keeping the animals within their homes or premises. The apex court’s observations came on the fourth day of hearings in the ongoing proceedings on stray dog management. (SANCHIT KHANNA/HT) A bench of justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and NV Anjaria also reproached states and Union territories (UTs) for failing to implement existing statutory rules, observing that decades of inaction had caused the stray dog problem to multiply “a thousand times, a zillion times”. “For every dog bite, for every death, we are likely to fix heavy compensation to be paid by states for not making requisite arrangements and not doing anything. And we will also fix liability on dog feeders. You …
