Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was present at the event. Speaking to The Indian Express, Kulkarni said she left because she felt “insulted”. “I felt insulted. I felt bad that at an event meant to felicitate successful students, my caste was brought up. That is why I left the stage,” she said. Among the big losers included former Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan who was contesting for a third time from Karad South seat. He was defeated by Atul Bhosale of the BJP. While Bhosale secured 1,39, 505 votes, Chavan managed 1,00,150 votes. Chavan lost by 39, 355 votes. While Chavan was unavailable for comment, Congress leaders like MLC Satej Patil and MLA Vishwajeet Kadam said money-power employed by Mahayuti and BJP led to the former chief minister’s defeat. Senior BJP leader Girish Mahajan, who is known as the party’s “troubleshooter”, is facing trouble in Jamner seat, from where he is contesting Assembly polls for a seventh term as an MLA. The trouble stems from a 2011 agitation in Jamner demanding higher minimum support price (MSP) for cotton — launched by Mahajan himself. Thirteen years later, discontent cotton and milk producers of the region are citing the 2011 agitation and demanding a fair MSP for their produce. Mahajan had sat on an indefinite hunger strike to demand Rs 6,000 per quintal MSP for cotton farmers in 2011, when the Congress-NCP government was in power in Maharashtra. The agitation had even turned violent. With Mahajan, who is the state minister of rural development, seeking re-election from the constituency, cotton farmers allege that they still get less than Rs 6,000 per quintal for their produce. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will contest from the Nagpur South West Vidhan Sabha constituency.   The party has given tickets to Maharashtra BJP state president Chandrashekhar Bawankule from Kamthi and Sreejaya Ashok Chavan from Bhokar. Notably, Sreejaya is the daughter of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, who quit Congress and joined BJP in February of this year. The list also includes the names of Mumbai BJP president Ashish Selar, fielded from the Vandre West seat, former state president Chandrakant Patil from Kothrud, and senior party leader and Lok Sabha MP Narayan Rane’s son Nitesh Rane, fielded from Kankavli, a seat he currently represents in the assembly.
