Warm air from Africa compressed in a dome: The ‘Omega block’ that’s causing Europe heatwave

Western Europe is in the grip of an early-summer heatwave that has shut schools, triggered red alerts across four countries and killed dozens of people. People cool off in the Trocadero fountain in front of the Eiffel Tower as temperatures rise in Paris during a heatwave affecting a large part of France. REUTERS/Abdul Saboor (REUTERS) France has linked more than 40 deaths to the heatwave, most of them drownings, as people sought relief in rivers, lakes and the sea. Temperatures have crossed 40°C in France and Spain, while Britain has issued a rare red heat warning — only the second in its history — for parts of central and southern England. Meteorologists trace the cause to a weather pattern called an ‘omega block’. Unpicking how it works explains why this heatwave is intense and why different parts of Europe are experiencing it so differently. The block The Omega block pattern takes its name from its resemblance to the Greek letter Ω: a bulge of warm, high-pressure air held between two pockets of cooler, low-pressure air, …

4 min readMumbaiUpdated: May 29, 2026 05:52 PM IST The Reserve Bank of India is exploring the possibility of introducing a ‘Kill switch’ mechanism that would allow users at the receiving end of a potential digital scam to immediately stop all financial transactions from their accounts. Besides, it has also proposed a ‘switch on’ and ‘switch off’ facility for all digital payment modes. This facility would help bolster consumer confidence and contribute towards controlling frauds in digital payment transactions, the RBI Annual Report said. What’s a ‘kill switch’ facility? A ‘kill switch facility’ is a mechanism that allows a system, device, account, or service to be shut down, disabled or blocked immediately in an emergency or under specific conditions. The proposal for a ‘Kill switch’, which is being examined by the government and the RBI, envisages, among other possibilities, an emergency button integrated into payment applications of lenders that could instantly freeze all banking operations when a user suspects they are being targeted by fraudsters. The Indian Express had reported in January this year that …

Supreme Court declines to interfere with forest clearances for Adani’s Madhya Pradesh coal block project

The Supreme Court on Thursday (May 21, 2026) declined to interfere with the environmental clearances granted to the Adani Group’s coal block project in Madhya Pradesh’s Singrauli district, pointing to the delay in challenging the approvals. A Bench comprising Justices P.S. Narasimha and Alok Aradhe was hearing a plea filed by environmental activist Ajay Dubey challenging an April 22 order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which had dismissed his plea against the May 2025 environmental clearance granted to Mahan Energen Ltd., a subsidiary of Adani Power, on the ground of limitation. Questioning the delay, the Bench orally observed, “Your original application itself was filed on January 22… why was there such a delay?” Under Section 16 of the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010, challenges to orders passed by statutory authorities must ordinarily be filed within 30 days, with a further 60-day extension permissible upon sufficient cause being shown. ‘Serious environmental issue’ Appearing for Mr. Dubey, advocate Siddharth Gupta contended that the matter involved grave environmental concerns and that technical objections ought not to stand …

‘Stars buy their own tickets worth Rs 18 cr on opening weekend’: ‘Block booking’ hits Tamil film industry | Tamil News

In recent times, the film business has become highly unpredictable with very few films actually connecting with the audience. Many films that post massive box office numbers are often accused of inflating collections through block bookings. What was once seen largely as a practice within the Hindi film industry, is also commonplace in the Tamil film industry. Stars are allegedly purchasing tickets worth crores to project the image of a Rs 100-crore blockbuster, while theatre owners are said to be pressuring small producers to buy a fixed number of tickets in exchange for securing even a single show in their theatres. ‘Big stars buy tickets worth Rs 18 crore’ Producer Dhananjayan, who has recently been vocal about the challenges faced by producers in the Tamil film industry, has now spoken about how box office figures are often far from organic. Speaking to Cinema Strategist, he said: “What is happening lately in Hindi cinema to increase box office revenue is corporate booking, bulk booking and fake booking. You can book tickets online now; you don’t even …
