Windows 11 tests Bluetooth audio sharing that connects two headsets at once

Windows 11 tests Bluetooth audio sharing that connects two headsets at once

Microsoft is bringing shared audio to Windows 11, allowing you to stream audio across two pairs of wireless headphones, speakers, earbuds, or hearing aids. The feature is built using the Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) audio codec, and it’s rolling out in preview to Windows 11 Insiders in the Dev and Beta channels. Shared audio comes in handy if you’re watching a movie on a laptop with your friend or family member, or just want to show them new music that you can both stream inside your own wireless headsets. You can use shared audio by connecting Bluetooth LE-supported devices to your Windows 11 PC and then selecting the “Shared audio (preview) button in your quick settings menu. For now, shared audio in Windows 11 is only available on select Copilot Plus PCs, including the 13.8 and 15-inch Surface Laptops and the 13-inch Surface Pro. It’s coming to the Samsung Galaxy Book5 360, Galaxy Book5 Pro, 13-inch Surface Laptop, and others at a later date. You can also only use the feature with devices compatible with …

Bluetooth 6.1 Announced With Support for Enhanced Privacy, Better Battery Life

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) recently announced the latest Bluetooth 6.1 standard, and it is designed to protect user privacy while using devices that offer support for the wireless connectivity protocol. New devices with Bluetooth 6.1 support could arrive by 2026, and could deliver improved power efficiency enabled by the latest standard. The Bluetooth SIG recently moved to a bi-annual release schedule, which means that we can expect the next version of Bluetooth to release in the second half of 2025. Bluetooth 6.1 Adds Randomised RPA Timing for Improved Privacy The latest Bluetooth 6.1 Core Specification announcement states that there are two notable changes to the wireless communication protocol. The first change will improve the privacy of devices that are connected using Bluetooth 6.1, while the other will improve battery life on devices that rely on the wireless communication protocol. Bluetooth 6 arrived last year with support for changing the MAC address of a device to protect user privacy, using a Resolvable Private Address (RPA). This is done at a fixed 15-minute interval, which could …

Billions of Devices at Risk of Hacking Due to Hidden Commands

Tarlogic team giving their presentation during RootedCON. Image: Tarlogic Billions of devices worldwide rely on a widely used Bluetooth-Wi-Fi chip that contains undocumented “hidden commands.” Researchers warn these commands could be exploited to manipulate memory, impersonate devices, and bypass security controls. ESP32, manufactured by a Chinese company called Espressif, is a microcontroller that enables Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections in numerous smart devices, including smartphones, laptops, smart locks, and medical equipment. Its popularity is partly due to its low cost, with units available for just a few dollars. Must-read security coverage Hidden Bluetooth commands and potential exploits Researchers at security firm Tarlogic discovered 29 undocumented Host Controller Interface commands within the ESP32’s Bluetooth firmware. These commands enable low-level control over some Bluetooth functions, such as reading and writing memory, modifying MAC addresses, and injecting malicious packets, according to Bleeping Computer, which attended Tarlogic’s presentation at RootedCON. Twelve South’s travel-friendly Bluetooth dongle is on sale for its best price yet

Twelve South’s travel-friendly Bluetooth dongle is on sale for its best price yet

The Twelve South AirFly SE is one of those gadgets that can make long flights go by just a little faster, allowing you to eschew the shoddy pair of complimentary earbuds you get with most airlines in favor of your own set of Bluetooth cans. And right now, it’s on sale at Amazon and Best Buy for $29.99 ($5 off), which is a new all-time low. Twelve South’s entry-level Bluetooth transmitter features an integrated 3.5mm cable, meaning all you need to do is plug it into the seatback entertainment system and pair it with your favorite pair of wireless earbuds or noise-canceling headphones. It doesn’t last as long as the step-up AirFly Pro and Pro Deluxe — nor does it allow for two simultaneous connections — but it still lets a single user eke out 20 hours of continuous playback on a single charge. Plus, it works with virtually any standard audio jack, making the compact dongle an easy way to add Bluetooth connectivity to older devices… including that aging treadmill at the gym that’s …

AirTags vs. Tile vs. Chipolo: the best Bluetooth trackers for 2025

AirTags vs. Tile vs. Chipolo: the best Bluetooth trackers for 2025

Some people rarely lose things. Wallets are always exactly where they’re supposed to be, keys never go missing, and remotes never slip between the couch cushions. And then there’s the rest of us — the folks who can’t ever seem to find the thing that was right there a few seconds ago. For us, there are Bluetooth trackers. Bluetooth trackers have been around for a long time, and they all generally work the same way. You stick the tracker onto an object, pair it with your phone, and then, when you lose said object, you can go into an app and ring the tracker. But these days, Bluetooth trackers can do a lot more. Some have ultra-wideband chips that enable precision tracking, so you can find exactly where in a room your item is. Others tap into large networks that make it easier to find lost items outside the home. Many will notify you if they detect you’ve left the device behind or come with QR codes that link to your contact information so people …

This LG lamp is also a projector and Bluetooth speaker

This LG lamp is also a projector and Bluetooth speaker

LG is coming to CES with two all-in-one “lifestyle projectors” which means they’re gong to look great when off, but not necessarily provide the best picture for the money when on. Both run on webOS with plenty of support for your favorite streaming apps. The PF600U is three devices in one, combing a simple full HD projector with a Bluetooth speaker and standing floor lamp. It weighs 16 pounds 8 ounces (7.5kg) and features two speakers of unknown spectitude, as well as an LED lamp capable of nine colors and five brightness levels. That image is simulated so temper your expectations for the PF600U.Image: LG The projector swivels on a 110-degree tilting head with an automatic screen adjustment function that should make it quick and easy to fine tune the projected image as you move the lamp around the room. Just note that it’s only capable of producing 300 ANSI lumens of brightness which means that 1920 x 1080 image won’t look very good unless viewed in blackout conditions. I love how small the CineBeam …

This mod turns the PSP into a tiny PS2 with Bluetooth controller support

This mod turns the PSP into a tiny PS2 with Bluetooth controller support

What if you could turn a PSP with a broken screen into a miniature PS2, connect a Bluetooth controller to it, and play PSP games on your TV? That’s the idea behind Retro Mod Works’ PS Placeable, a mod that “consolizes” the PSP and was featured yesterday in a video from the YouTube channel Macho Nacho Productions. Retro Mod Works charges $274.99 for a prebuilt PS Placeable. Those are waitlisted at the moment, though — a message on the site says the project is a “one man show” and that the demand for the Placeable was higher than anticipated. Retro also offers to mod customer-provided PSPs for $100 less, and there’s an option preorder DIY parts and do the conversion work yourself. The mod requires either a PSP-2000 or PSP-3000 revision, as the first PSP didn’t have a video output. It’s not clear when the DIY parts will ship — we’ve asked Retro Mod Works and will update if we get a reply. A stack of PS Placeables.Image: Retro Mod Works The primary person behind …
