Boris Becker shocked as Zheng Qinwen controversially refuses warm-up, psychologically rattles Kostyuk at Indian Wells | Tennis News

Zheng Qinwen courted controversy during her fourth round win against Marta Kostyuk at the Indian Wells Open, on Wednesday. During the warm-up before the match began, Kostyuk was hitting volleys, but suddenly had to stop as her Chinese opponent refused to continue, despite time being left on the clock. Boris Becker was speechless in reaction to Zheng Qinwen’s warm-up controversy with Marta Kostyuk. Kostyuk seemed psychologically rattled by the moment and could only react in utter confusion. The Ukrainian ended up losing the match, 3-6 2-6. What happened during the warm-up routine between Zheng Qinwen and Marta Kostyuk at Indian Wells? The incident happened with one minute and 40 seconds left on the warm-up clock, and then suddenly Qinwen was sending lob shots to her opponent, so she could get some volley practice. Then suddenly, Qinwen decided to stop it and wanted to start serving. Kostyuk, who was confused by the bizarre behavior, complained to the chair umpire, who intervened and the warm-up clock was reset, and asked Qinwen to continue with the warm-ups. In …

Boris Spassky, endlessly witty and a free soul, was more than just Fischer’s victim or a Soviet Union foot soldier

Boris Spassky, endlessly witty and a free soul, was more than just Fischer’s victim or a Soviet Union foot soldier

In the many obituaries for Boris Spassky that popped up after his demise last week, not many mentioned what the 10th world champion did to Danish grandmaster Bent Larsen on the top board of the clash between USSR and the Rest of the World in 1970. Incidentally, this was the first ‘Match of the Century’ that both Spassky and his nemesis Bobby Fischer played in. But this one was a team event in Belgrade, which featured players like Tigran Petrosian, Vasily Smyslov, Mikhail Botvinnik and Mikhail Tal besides Spassky and Fischer. In that match, Larsen was picked as the top board player over Fischer for the Rest of the World side, while Spassky, as reigning world champion, was given the honour of leading an outfit that had his predecessors on the throne like Petrosian, Smyslov, Botvinnik and Tal. It’s a game that starts with Larsen playing the off-beat 1.b3 (which has since been named after him as the Larsen Opening). The provocative opening is the 6th most common opening move with white pieces and offers …

Boris Spassky: The man who dared George Bush to put him and Bobby Fischer in same cell, ‘and give us a chess set’ | Chess News

Boris Spassky, the 10th world champion in the history of chess, breathed his last in Moscow on Thursday at the age of 88. For the world at large, Spassky’s is the name that lives on in hyphenated eternity with Bobby Fischer’s: the duo wrestled for the world champion’s crown in 1972 in frigid Reykjavik in a match billed the Match Of The Century. Spassky was a man who stood out for his grace. In September 1972, barely three days after he had lost the world champion’s crown to the brash, loud-mouthed Fischer in the Match of the Century, Spassky was asked in an interview if his opponent’s shenanigans in the match had affected him. On the way to beating Spassky, Fischer had kept the world including his opponent on edge about the match happening at all, skipped the opening ceremony, forced game 1 of the world championship to be deferred, forfeited game 2, forced game 3 to be played in a small room behind the actual playing arena, and complained incessantly about things like the …

ISL: Boris Singh Guides FC Goa To 1-0 Win Over Kerala Blasters FC

ISL: Boris Singh Guides FC Goa To 1-0 Win Over Kerala Blasters FC

FC Goa clinched their 50th clean sheet in the competition and continued their formidable form as they edged past Kerala Blasters FC 1-0 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season on Thursday. It was an intensely cagey affair between the two teams, as neither was allowing an inch to their opposition. It was an interesting midfield tussle, with the Kerala Blasters FC preferring their homegrown talents, Vibin Mohanan and Freddy Lallawmawma, against FC Goa’s Carl McHugh-led midfield. The first opportunity of the game fell to Iker Guarrotxena when the Spaniard struck the post from a well-planned freekick. It was straight out of the training ground and it took the opposition defenders by surprise. However, it was cleared away after hitting the far post with Sachin Suresh completely beaten between the sticks. The Gaurs were relentless in attack post the 30-minute mark and their persistence eventually bore fruit when Sahil Tavora found Boris Singh on the right flank with acres of space. The winger tried his …

‘Israel PM Netanyahu bugged my bathroom with listening devices’, claims Ex-UK PM Boris Johnson | World News

Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has claimed that his security team found a listening device from his personal bathroom after it was used by Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu during their meeting in 2017, The Telegraph reported citing an excerpt of the Conservative politician’s new book. Johnson’s new book titled ‘Unleashed’, which is slated for its release on October 10, mentioned the episode wherein the alleged incident took place in British Foreign Office when Johnson was serving as UK’s foreign secretary. Johnson has alleged in his memoir that during his meeting with Netanyahu, the latter whom he refers to as Bibi, excused to go to the bathroom which Johnson described as similar to “the gents in a posh London club” which exist within a “secret annexe”. In the book, Johnson writes, “Thither Bibi repaired for a while, and it may or may not be a coincidence but I am told that later, when they were doing a regular sweep for bugs, they found a listening device in the thunderbox.” Post the excerpt was published in …

Rafael Nadal’s “Days Are Numbered”: Tennis Legend Boris Becker Issues Damning Retirement Verdict

The winner of 22 Grand Slam titles, Rafael Nadal witnessed an early elimination from the 2023 Australian Open, suffering a straight-sets defeat against Mackenzie McDonald in the second round. Nadal struggled to even complete the match, suffering a hip issue in the second set. The Spaniard even took a medical timeout before returning to the court but couldn’t play at the tempo he usually does. Giving a rather brutal assessment of the stage Nadal’s career has come, the legendary Boris Becker said that his “days are numbered”. Becker hailed Nadal as “one of the most important sportsmen of the last 25 years” but feels the Australian Open 2nd Round exit was his first step towards retirement. “We’ve been talking about the change of generation for a long time, and then Nadal comes along last year and wins not only in Melbourne but also Paris,” Becker said on Eurosport Germany’s Matchball Becker show. “The question was: Will he play until he’s 40? I don’t think so. Yesterday was already the first step towards his retirement. “An …

“Nights Were Atrocious”: Emotional Boris Becker Recounts Prison Experience

Former tennis superstar Boris Becker said he relied on “blood brothers” to protect him in a British prison and said his life was threatened twice in his first interview since being released. The 55-year-old German was deported to Germany after being released last week having served eight months of a two and a half years sentence for flouting insolvency rules by hiding GBP 2.5 million ($3.1 million) of assets and loans to avoid paying debts. He had been declared bankrupt in June 2017, owing creditors GBP 50 million over an unpaid loan of more than GBP 3 million on his estate on the Spanish island of Majorca. In an often emotional three hour interview with German broadcaster Sat.1 the former tennis world number one said the nights in Wandsworth Prison — not far from where he won the Wimbledon title three times — were “atrocious.” He said he was fortunate to have forged close ties with a group of inmates he termed “blood brothers” as two prisoners he called ‘John’ and ‘Ike’ on separate occasions …

Boris Becker Deported To Germany From UK After Prison Release

Disgraced former tennis superstar Boris Becker was due back in Germany on Thursday after being deported following his release from a British prison where he served a sentence relating to his 2017 bankruptcy, his lawyer said. The 55-year-old German six-time Grand Slam champion “was released from custody in England and has left for Germany today,” his Berlin-based attorney Christian-Oliver Moser said in a statement. He added Becker has “served his sentence and is not subject to any penal restrictions in Germany”. Moser declined to provide information on where Becker would arrive and said any requests for interviews “will not be answered”. However news magazine Der Spiegel reported that Becker landed in Munich in the afternoon on a chartered private plane. German national Becker was jailed for two and a half years in April for flouting insolvency rules by hiding GBP 2.5 million ($3.1 million) of assets and loans to avoid paying debts. He had been declared bankrupt in June 2017, owing creditors GBP 50 million over an unpaid loan of more than GBP 3 million …

File photo of Boris Becker© AFP Former tennis superstar Boris Becker has been released from prison after serving a sentence relating to his 2017 bankruptcy, British media said on Thursday. The domestic Press Association news agency said the 55-year-old German six-time Grand Slam champion will now be deported from the UK, following earlier reports in the press in Germany. Becker was jailed for two and a half years in April for hiding £2.5 million ($3.1 million) of assets and loans to avoid paying debts. He had been declared bankrupt in June 2017, owing creditors £50 million over an unpaid loan on his estate on the Spanish island of Majorca. A judge at Southwark Crown Court in south London told Becker, who has lived in the UK since 2012, that he would serve half of his sentence in prison. But he was released on Thursday morning and was now due to be deported, PA said, without quoting sources. He was initially reported to have been held at Wandsworth Prison in southwest London, near to the All …
