Kane scores as Bayern deliver comeback romp over Leipzig

Kane scores as Bayern deliver comeback romp over Leipzig

Harry Kane scored his 21st goal of the Bundesliga season as Bayern Munich came from behind to win 5-1 at RB Leipzig on Saturday. The victory restores Bayern’s 11-point lead atop the ladder over second-placed Borussia Dortmund, while continuing their record-breaking campaign. Unbeaten Bayern have dropped just four points on their way to a record-equalling tally of 50 after 18 games. Bayern’s total of 71 goals scored is also a record at this stage of a German league season. Leipzig took a first-half lead through Romulo, but Bayern kicked into gear after the break, Serge Gnabry, Kane, Jonathan Tah, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Michael Olise all scoring. Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said Leipzig were “twice as good as we were” in the opening half, adding “but in the second-half my god, the boys delivered. “We weren’t afraid and we really went for it.” Leipzig goalscorer Romulo said “we played 75 minutes really on top, then I don’t know what happened, we turned off our minds. We have to learn something out of that.” Leipzig were strong …

Borussia Dortmund Complete Escape Act, Snatch Last-Gasp Champions League Spot

Borussia Dortmund Complete Escape Act, Snatch Last-Gasp Champions League Spot

Borussia Dortmund will play Champions League football next season after a 3-0 home win over a 10-man Holstein Kiel on Saturday completed an incredible late-season run. Sitting in 11th place just seven weeks ago, Dortmund collected 22 of a possible 24 points in their last eight league matches, climbing up to fourth, past Freiburg who lost 3-1 at home against Eintracht Frankfurt.  Dortmund, who had not been in the top four since the end of matchday three in September, got off to an excellent start against their already relegated opponents when Serhou Guirassy converted a third-minute penalty.   Knowing they needed a big win to guarantee a top-four finish, Dortmund’s hopes looked even rosier just six minutes later when Kiel’s Carl Johansson saw red for a last-man foul.  Marcel Sabitzer added a second with a deflected low shot two minutes after halftime and Felix Nmecha made it three when he scored from close range with 73 minutes gone. Dortmund coach Niko Kovac, who took over in January, said his side, Champions League finalists …

Borussia Dortmund Hope To Take ‘Final Step’ In Unlikely Top-Four Rescue Act

Borussia Dortmund Hope To Take ‘Final Step’ In Unlikely Top-Four Rescue Act

Borussia Dortmund can take the “final step” in their miraculous run to the Bundesliga top four with a big win at home against Holstein Kiel on Saturday.  After a 2-0 loss at RB Leipzig in March, Dortmund were 11th and did not look like finishing in the top half of the table, let alone the top four. But since then, Dortmund have won six and drawn one of their seven games, putting the chance of qualifying for the Champions League through a top-four finish firmly in their own hands ahead of Saturday’s final Bundesliga matchday.  With third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt playing at fourth-placed Freiburg, fifth-placed Dortmund have a simple assignment against Kiel, who have already been relegated.  Dortmund need to win by three goals to guarantee a spot in the top four regardless of other results, although a two-goal victory is likely to be enough.  If Frankfurt beat Freiburg or draw, Dortmund will also be through to the top four, provided they beat Kiel.  Champions League qualification is crucial for Dortmund, who rely heavily on …

Borussia Dortmund Thump Bayer Leverkusen To Spoil Xabi Alonso’s Home Farewell

Borussia Dortmund Thump Bayer Leverkusen To Spoil Xabi Alonso’s Home Farewell

Borussia Dortmund romped to a 4-2 win at Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday, spoiling Xabi Alonso’s last match in the home dugout while boosting their Champions League hopes. The visitors came from one down as Jeremie Frimpong’s early strike was cancelled out by goals from Julian Brandt, Julian Ryerson, Karim Adeyemi and Serhou Guirassy. Alonso, who took Leverkusen to a league and cup double last year in his first full season in charge, announced his impending departure from the club on Friday, with Real Madrid the Spaniard’s likely destination. Leverkusen’s title defence fizzled out with a 2-2 draw at Freiburg last Sunday, but the home fans were in a celebratory mood, one year after Alonso took them to a first league title in their 120-year history. Before the game, Leverkusen celebrated Alonso’s time at the club as fans chanted ‘Danke Xabi’ and held up placards with pictures of the Basque coach, but Dortmund were in no mood to celebrate. The hosts dominated the opening period, pinning Dortmund in their own half. Only some spectacular …

Wolfsburg Sack Ralph Hasenhuettl After Borussia Dortmund Thumping

Wolfsburg Sack Ralph Hasenhuettl After Borussia Dortmund Thumping

File image of Ralph Hasenhuettl© X (Twitter) Bundesliga side Wolfsburg on Sunday sacked manager Ralph Hasenhuettl, a day after a 4-0 defeat at Borussia Dortmund. Wolfsburg issued a statement saying the club decided to terminate the Austrian’s contract due to “results in the recent months”. Wolfsburg have lost six of their past eight games and have won just twice since January. In contention for European football earlier in the season, Wolfsburg have slid to 12th on the table.  Hasenhuettl took over from former coach and current Dortmund boss Niko Kovac in March 2024, after a four-year stint at Premier League side Southampton. Under-19s coach Daniel Bauer will take over on an interim basis, the 2009 Bundesliga title winners confirmed. ‘We’re not through yet’: Coach Hansi Flick after Barcelona thrash Dortmund in Champions League QF 1st leg | Football News

‘We’re not through yet’: Coach Hansi Flick after Barcelona thrash Dortmund in Champions League QF 1st leg | Football News

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick was cautious even after the Catalan club thrashing Borussia Dortmund 4-0 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal, saying they are still not through to the next round yet. It’s not a surprise that he would be wary because Barcelona have been prone to throw away decent 1st leg leads and collapse in the second leg. The most famous or infamous example of this was against Liverpool in the 2018-19 season when Barcelona won the first leg at Camp Nou 3-0 only for them to lose the return leg at Anfield 4-0 which led to their elimination. It happened in the 2017-18 season against Roma as well when the Catalan club won 4-1 in the first leg before losing the second leg 3-0 with the Italian side progressing to the next round on away goals. Story continues below this ad “We’re not through yet. Winning by this many goals is important and, when a team plays as well as that, goals normally do flow. We aren’t thinking we …

Frenkie De Jong Revival Helping Barcelona Dream As Borussia Dortmund Visit

Frenkie De Jong Revival Helping Barcelona Dream As Borussia Dortmund Visit

Barcelona’s improvement under Hansi Flick helped Frenkie de Jong return to form and in return the Dutchman’s presence has allowed his club to aspire to new heights this season. The Catalan giants are in contention for a possible quadruple and host Borussia Dortmund in a Champions League quarter-final first leg on Wednesday. Since De Jong has reestablished himself, Barcelona have stepped up a gear, battling their way back to the top of La Liga as well as sailing onwards in Europe. They last won the Champions League in 2015 and after a catalogue of humiliations find themselves back among the favourites to lift the trophy. Last season they reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 2020, and this year are favourites to progress to the final four. De Jong has formed a stylish tandem at the heart of Barcelona’s midfield with Pedri Gonzalez. While neither player is at their best when burdened with defensive responsibilities, together they do enough to help Barca survive at the back while flourishing offensively. “Playing with a …

Borussia Dortmund Beat Mainz To Keep Champions League Hopes Alive

Borussia Dortmund Beat Mainz To Keep Champions League Hopes Alive

Maximilian Beier scored twice as Borussia Dortmund won 3-1 at home to Mainz in the Bundesliga on Sunday, keeping their slim hopes of European qualification alive. Champions League finalists last season, Dortmund had lost four of their past six games to sink to 12th before the match.  Dortmund were without injured striker Serhou Guirassy but Beier filled the void as he gave the hosts the lead after 32 minutes, finishing off a goal he initiated. The 22-year-old Germany forward gathered the ball in midfield, shed a defender and found Julian Brandt who whipped in a cross and Beier threaded the ball to Karim Adeyemi, who returned the favour, giving him a simple tap-in.  Emre Can doubled Dortmund’s lead just four minutes later, heading in a Nico Schlotterbeck corner. Schlotterbeck supplied Dortmund’s third as well in the 72nd minute, floating in a superb ball which allowed Beier to head home, before Mainz pulled one back through Paul Nebel. Dortmund manager Niko Kovac said there was “nothing more beautiful than winning in football”, but added …

Champions League: Champions Real Madrid leave it late to set up Arsenal clash, here is the confirmed quarterfinal line-up | Football News

It was yet another dramatic night of UEFA Champions League football as Real Madrid beat Atletico 4-2 on penalties to reach the quarter-finals. It was an enthralling last-16 tie which ended 2-2 after extra time in a raucous atmosphere at Metropolitano on Wednesday, before Real Madrid produced another thrilling win, keeping with their rich tradition of getting over the line in tight encounters and causing more European heartache for their city rivals. Earlier on Tuesday, it was Paris Saint Germain who prevailed in another thriller, ending Liverpool’s hopes of a treble this season, as they won 1-0 at Anfield to level the tie and then prevailed in the shootout. Here is the quarterfinal lineup. The fixtures will be played on April 8/9 and April 15/16: Real Madrid vs Arsenal For the first time since Thierry Henry scored a sensational solo goal at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in 2005/06 season (followed by a 0-0 draw at Highbury), Arsenal will meet Real Madrid in arguably the fixture of the quarterfinals. The English side’s title challenge domestically has …

Borussia Dortmund Keep Top 4 Hopes Alive, Serhou Guirassy Takes Season Tally To 24 Goals

Borussia Dortmund Keep Top 4 Hopes Alive, Serhou Guirassy Takes Season Tally To 24 Goals

Serhou Guirassy scored as Borussia Dortmund boosted their slim top-four hopes with a 2-0 win at St Pauli on Saturday, while RB Leipzig’s slide continued with a home loss to Mainz. Fresh from scoring four goals in a 6-0 demolition of Union Berlin last time out, Guirassy put Dortmund in front five minutes into the second half, tapping in a Karim Adeyemi pass. Adeyemi put Dortmund in the driver’s seat with an excellent solo goal eight minutes later. The 23-year-old Adeyemi, one of the smallest players on the pitch, latched onto a long ball and used his strength to grapple past two defenders before slotting home. It is the first time Dortmund have won two in a row in the league this season. Dortmund, who host Lille in the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday, sit 10th, six points off fourth with 10 games remaining. Guirassy has 24 goals in all competitions for Dortmund since arriving from Stuttgart in July, more than St Pauli have managed in the league all season. A “relieved” …
