Nine cheetahs from the Southern African country of Botswana were released on Saturday into Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh’s Sheopur, taking their number there to 45 apart from three in the Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary in the central Indian state’s Chenpuriya. India launched the cheetah reintroduction project in September 2022. (X) “It marks the beginning of a historic partnership between Botswana and India in the field of biodiversity conservation,” said Union environment, forest and climate change minister Bhupender Yadav, who released the cheetahs into special quarantine at the park after they were airlifted from Gwalior on three Indian Air Force helicopters. The third batch of African cheetahs was flown to India on an Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft as part of the country’s four-year cheetah revival plan. Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav is scheduled to release the animals into specially prepared enclosures at the park, news agency PTI reported, citing an official. The animals will be released into quarantine enclosures at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, where officials will closely monitor their health and behaviour before gradually preparing them for life in the wild. The batch, comprising six females and two males, will be airlifted from Botswana to Gwalior on an Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft, and then transported to Kuno by helicopter. A batch of eight cheetahs is scheduled to be translocated from Botswana to Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park (KNP) on February 28, officials said on Monday. The move will take India’s total cheetah population to 46 as eight cubs were born at the KNP this month.  Botswana is the third African nation to send cheetahs to India as part of the Union Government’s Project Cheetah. Two batches of cheetahs have arrived from Namibia and South Africa since the project to reintroduce the species in India was kickstarted in September, 2022. Botswana Wednesday formally announced the translocation of eight cheetahs to India amid President Droupadi Murmu’s state visit. In the capital, Gaborone, the President spoke with counterpart Duma Gideon Boko about expanding the India-Africa partnership. Gaborone , President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Botswana on Tuesday on the final leg of her two-nation visit to Africa, aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and finalising an agreement on the translocation of eight Kalahari desert cheetahs to India. India is set to welcome eight cheetahs from Botswana in southern Africa, with the translocation scheduled in two phases. Officials have confirmed that the first group of four cheetahs will arrive by May, reported news agency PTI. According to a release from the Madhya Pradesh government, this update was shared by officials of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) during a review meeting of the Cheetah Project held on Friday.
