With less than 40 days left for the Commonwealth Games 2026, countries have started announcing their squads for the event. India has also begun unveiling its contingent for the Games, which will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23rd to August 2nd. This year’s Commonwealth Games will feature only 10 sports. The reduced programme comes after the original host, the Australian state of Victoria, withdrew from hosting the event in 2023 due to financial concerns. Scotland later stepped in and opted for a smaller and more cost-effective edition of the Games. The 10 sports at Glasgow 2026 are: Athletics and Para Athletics, Swimming and Para Swimming, 3×3 Basketball and Wheelchair Basketball, Boxing, Track Cycling and Para Cycling, Artistic Gymnastics, Judo, Lawn Bowls and Para Bowls, Netball, and Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting. A 50-year-old boxing coach was at the Kanteerava Stadium was arrested by Bengaluru Police for sexually harassing a minor athlete. As per reports, the mother of a 17-year-old boxer alleged who trains at a club in the stadium, in a complaint alleged that a coach named Ramachandra has been sexually harassing her daughter nearly six months. The victim has been training at the club since a decade, whereas the coach joined four years ago. As per a report in Times of India, the coach alleged called the girl to his room during a competition in Chennai earlier this month and despite resistance kissed her and touched her inappropriately. Similar incidents took place earlier as well as per the complaint. A case was registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and BNS section 351 against the coach and he has been remanded in judicial custody. The national trials for selection of the Indian team have already been conducted in sports like Boxing and Archery, whereas athletes have already started breaching the qualification standard set by the federations in sports like Athletics.
