Sir Geoffrey Boycott’s advice to England ahead of Ashes 2nd Test: ‘All we ask is for them to use their brains and realise there are times when they should throttle back’ | Cricket News

Sir Geoffrey Boycott said that England are perfectly capable of defeating Australia in the second Test but that can only be done if captain Ben Stokes and Co don’t depend on relentlessly attacking the game in spite of the situation dictating otherwise. Stokes had irked a lot of former players with his comments where he had called them has-beens. He has since said that he could have chosen his words more carefully. “England can beat Australia in Brisbane. Man for man, they are more talented than the Aussies but it doesn’t help our chances of success if Ben Stokes keeps encouraging our batsmen to attack, attack with one finger hovering over the self-destruct button. Nobody is asking the players to stop being positive because they have given us some marvellous, thrilling and entertaining cricket. All we ask is for them to use their brains and realise there are times when they should throttle back and be aware of situations and bat accordingly. These Australians are not unbeatable but our England team keeps giving them ways …

Out-of-favour Pakistan cricket team batter Ahmed Shehzad has decided not to play the Champions Cup, the nation’s 50-over domestic cricket tournament which will kick off in Faisalabad on September 12. While announcing his decision, Shehzad revealed the reason behind it. He lashed out at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for “wasting” money on appointing mentors for the tournament at high cost. He also accused the PCB of favouritism, making “false promises and doing injustice to domestic players”. “With a heavy heart, I’ve decided not to play in the Domestic Cricket Champions Cup,” wrote Shehzad in a post on X. “The PCB’s favoritism, false promises, and injustice towards domestic players are unacceptable. In a time when Pakistan is struggling with inflation, poverty, and massive electricity bills, the PCB is wasting 5 million Rs on mentors for doing nothing and rewarding failed players in the current team who brought Pakistan cricket to an All-time Low,” he added. Former Pakistan cricketer Waqar Younis has been recently recruited as one of the mentors of the five Champions …

Former England captain Geoffrey Boycott has made a scathing attack on Ben Stokes and co after their dismal show in the recently-concluded five-match Test series against India. England started the five-match series with a win at Hyderabad but it went progressively worse for them and ended up losing the series 1-4. “Stokes says they will learn from this tour. I am not convinced. They will go back home and revert to type and beat ordinary West Indies and Sri Lanka teams and India will be forgotten as a distant memory, “wrote Boycott in his column in The Telegraph. England’s Joe Root plays a shot in the fourth Test between India and England at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi. (PTI Photo) Boycott was also critical of the overtly aggressive approach of England batters in the series. “They (English batters) were not confident of their ability to defend, especially with fielders around the bat, so they looked to attack instead. That idea is fraught with danger against quality spinners,” he wrote. Boycott also warned the …

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan (file) | Photo Credit: THULASI KAKKAT The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) boycotted Kerala Assembly proceedings on February 2 (Friday) after Speaker A.N. Veena. Mr. Shamseer’s stringent ruling that Rule 53 of the Kerala Assembly’s Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business precluded any discussion on a subject under the consideration of the judiciary or a statutory body with investigative powers drew a vociferous protest from the UDF. Speaking to reporters outside the Assembly precincts later, Mr. Satheesan accused Mr. Vijayan of breaching parliamentary privilege by “misleading” the House about Ms. Veena’s alleged financial shenanigans.
