Union, W.B. Education Ministers spar over NEP, funds

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan addressing a teachers’ conference in Kolkata on Saturday. | Photo Credit: ANI Criticising the Mamata Banerjee government on several fronts relating to education, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday said that West Bengal lost Central funds worth ₹10,000 crore by not implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) in the State. “Despite repeated requests, the NEP was not implemented in West Bengal by the State government. The policy talks about education in the mother tongue, and in West Bengal, that would have been Bengali. The State government does not want to allow education in Bengali,” Mr. Pradhan said while addressing a teachers’ conference organised by the Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kolkata on Saturday. The Union Minister said that had the NEP been implemented, additional funds would have been given to the State under the Samagra Shiksha Mission. Kolkata police asks Jadavpur University for ‘location suggestions’ on campus for permanent police outpost | Kolkata News

The Kolkata police have formally requested Jadavpur University to identify suitable locations on campus for the establishment of a permanent police outpost. This move comes in the wake of escalating tensions after West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu was allegedly heckled and students were injured during a protest in the campus on March 1. If established, this would be West Bengal’s first permanent Kolkata police outpost inside a university campus. Two days ago, an FIR was registered against Progressive Democratic Students Federation (PDSF), a student body, over graffiti and posters in campus. It was alleged that the posters and graffiti were intended to incite hatred and disrupt public peace. The graffiti and posters featured slogans such as “Azad Kashmir,” “Free Palestine,” and “Fascism Must Burn”, Kolkata police said. Police added they may summon individuals for questioning. A day after violent protests against State Education Minister Bratya Basu at Jadavpur University (JU) in Kolkata on Saturday, sevens FIRs were filed on Sunday at the local police station in connection with the incident and a former JU student was arrested in connection with a an arson incident later on Saturday, police said on Sunday. Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma told mediapersons, “The police suo motu filed two FIRs and five other FIRs were filed by different organisations.” Basu was allegedly heckled and his vehicle gheraoed and vandalised by students during a protest that erupted during Basu’s visit to the Jadavpur University (JU) in Kolkata on Saturday. The protesters, however, alleged that some students among them were injured after being hit by the minister’s convoy on the campus. Two students were injured when a car in the convoy of Mr. Basu grazed past them during a melee in Jadavpur University (JU) on March 1, 2025 as Leftists students tried to prevent the Minister from leaving the campus, demanding a discussion on the conduct of student union polls.
