Ethanol blending in fuel: What Brazil does, and where other countries stand

Brazil is often cited as a successful example and inspiration for India’s fuel-blended-with-ethanol programme. The Centre has maintained that ethanol blending in India has been carried out gradually. (Representative image) In August last year, Union petroleum minister Hardeep Singh Puri said Brazil has been using E27 – i.e. fuel blending with 27% ethanol – for years, and has not reported issues with car engines because of it. Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari also made a case for increasing ethanol levels by pointing to Brazil, which achieved 100% blending years ago. The topic was thrust into the spotlight as India hit its 20% ethanol blending target – E20 – roughly five years ahead of the government’s original 2030 goal. From April 1 this year, E20 became the default petrol grade at pumps nationwide. We are never going home, by French DJ

We are never going home, by French DJ

2 min readJul 6, 2026 03:21 PM IST Beating powerhouse Brazil was the start of some iconic celebrations for Norway who have outdone themselves with their simple song of glee. It’s a two-line remix ditty by the aptly titled Streaming artists Futuristic Hitz, though the original ‘We are never going home’ was a 2021 hit by Kungs or French tech house DJ Valentin Brunel. While Erling Braut Haaland led the Row Row Viking Row celebrations, taking on the drum beating to conduct the chant, it was the team cellys inside their New York dressing room that broke into a team song. It’s really just one line said on repeat: “We are never going home whoa oh oh whoa” as they get into a circle and jump around belting it out at full decibel. The red drums aren’t the only piece of nose-making they carry. The team also travels with a red colour suitcase strolley speaker. The song ‘We are never going home’ is a very literal declaration of intent, with Martin Odegaard leading the chants. …

Erling Haaland continues hot streak at debut World Cup

Erling Haaland continues hot streak at debut World Cup

4 min readUpdated: Jul 6, 2026 12:31 PM IST Norway surprised five-time champions Brazil with a 2-1 win at the New Jersey Stadium in New York, USA, on Sunday. Erling Haaland’s brilliant brace helped the Scandinavian nation triumph, with substitute midfielder Andreas Schjeldrup assisting in both goals. Neymar’s late penalty did little to save Brazil from coming back as Haaland’s brace proved significant in sealing Norway’s place in the quarterfinal, where they will face England. The Manchester City striker has rapidly emerged as one of the most naturally gifted goalscorers of his generation with sharp instincts and movements. He may lack the ability to link up play or may not be the best creator on the pitch just yet, but in the box, few slam the ball into the back of the net with greater frequency than him at the very first opportunity. “He has something that maybe you can’t train so much — the sniff for goals, the feeling that the ball will land at your feet, or in that movement, and I think …

‘What I’m doing is unreal .. it’s big, you know?’

3 min readJul 6, 2026 11:44 AM IST He’s getting them Samba-folk to say, “I’m Brazilian, but this guy….”, gushing about Erling Haaland. With absolute non-chalance, the superstar of Norway pushing Brazil out of the World Cup and his country into quarters, spoke to the media in New York, telling them he couldn’t believe his own wonderful run of 7 goals in 4 games at the FIFA World Cup. “First of all I’d like say, we’ve been growing *”!#@& now over time. We’re (Norway are) actually one of the better teams in Europe and in the world,” Haaland would say in the presser. Norway have never lost to Brazil ever, but defeating them in a World Cup Knockout was the next push. A fake reel has Haaland chomping into food at a restaurant, looking into the mirror and wincing at the sight – afraid of what he sees. But away from memes, Haaland has been striking consistently – pulling a calm calculated Norwegian squad, into the business end. His father played at the last World …

How long before Brazil’s sixth star? Ancelotti’s beaten side may still be learning the way to win again beyond the noise

How long before Brazil’s sixth star? Ancelotti’s beaten side may still be learning the way to win again beyond the noise

Brazil will wake up to the usual noise. Another World Cup exit. Another post-mortem. Another round of arguments about identity, pressure, Neymar, Vinicius Jr, the missing No. 9, the fading romance of yellow shirts and the long shadow of 2002. That is unavoidable. For a country that has built its footballing soul around the World Cup, a Round of 16 defeat to Norway cannot be dressed up as success. Neymar reacts after losing the 2026 World Cup round of 16 football match between Brazil and Norway. (AFP) But not every defeat carries the same meaning. Some defeats expose emptiness. Some confirm decay. Some only deepen confusion. This one, painful as it was, should not be read only as another chapter in Brazil’s years of underachievement. Inside the disappointment, there were signs of something Brazil have needed for a long time: the beginning of a harder, colder, more tournament-ready version of themselves. For years, Brazil have been trapped between memory and modernity. The shirt still demands magic. The public still wants expression. The world still expects …

Ancelotti insinuates Arsenal’s Gabriel knows how to stop Erling Haaland

3 min readJul 5, 2026 03:58 PM IST Norway may not carry the heft of name that Brazil does but the Europeans come with the weight of having denied Italy an automatic spot at the World Cup and a balanced team that has some players around whom teams need to make plans. Erling Haaland scores at an astonishing rate for the Norwegians and has been part of a World Cup golden boot race for the ages. He now encounters a Brazil team that has met this event with an uncharacteristic pragmatism – one that is a direct result of Carlo Ancelotti taking over the reins. Ahead of the huge clash between the two teams at the Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, Ancelotti was asked about what Brazil’s containment plan for Haaland would be. “I don’t have to explain to my defenders how Haaland plays. They know him better than I do because they have played against him many times,” said Ancelotti. It was a reference to the many battles that Haaland and Brazil’s central defender …

How Norway’s 1998 upset win over Brazil inspired a comic opera

How Norway’s 1998 upset win over Brazil inspired a comic opera

4 min readJul 5, 2026 12:11 PM IST When Norway beat Brazil at 1998 World Cup, writer and satirist Are Kalvø zeroed in on one iconic image from the game. The famous frame showed a very skinny Tore André Flo of Norway trying to break free from a stocky Brazilian Junior Baiano. In the grainy photograph Flo was agape, eyes flailing as Baiano held his shirt from behind like a leash. The referee would award Norway a penalty that would give them a historic 2-1 win over the multiple World Champions. It was pure theatre and Kalvø was inspired. Years later, in 2012, he turned the moment into a comic opera called ‘Norge – Brasil, an opera’. It would get nominated for that year’s Hedda Awards for Best Production. As the two teams meet once again at this World Cup in the round of 16, the opera is reviving memories – and reminding Brazil that Norway are unconquered by them yet. They have never beaten them, even in friendlies. Brazil might not find it funny …

How Ancelotti’s changes sparked 45 minutes of peak Brazil

How Ancelotti’s changes sparked 45 minutes of peak Brazil

Nearly 70,000 people filled the stadium in Houston. Most were in euphoric delirium, some distraught. The moment demanded it. Brazil had scored the latest goal in regulation time of a World Cup knockout game, and the seemingly inevitable embarrassment of an early exit had been averted. Gabriel Martinelli, the substitute who had scored it, was mobbed. Players. Coaches. Support staff. Photographers. Amid all of them, Carlo Ancelotti. Stoic. Impassive. Calm. Around him, football dissolved into chaos. Carlo Ancelotti, as ever, refused to join it. Behind the stolid facade, though, lay relief. It had worked again, as it so often does. Substitutes Martinelli and Endrick both played decisive roles in the 95th-minute winner as Brazil overturned a first-half deficit to beat Japan 2-1. The second-half performance contrasted as sharply with the first as Ancelotti’s reaction did with those around him after the final whistle, and the difference came down to one thing: Ancelotti admitting a mistake, mid-tournament, in public, and reverting to default before it cost his team the World Cup.
