Thiruvananthapuram, A statewide vigilance probe into illegal soil mining and transportation in Kerala has found that 14 officials across departments allegedly accepted bribes totalling ₹4.69 lakh through UPI transactions from soil contractors and applicants. Acting on intelligence inputs about widespread irregularities, the vigilance department conducted surprise checks and found serious violations, including removal of soil beyond permitted limits and misuse of building permits for illegal excavation. In many cases, landowners obtained permits for construction, removed large quantities of soil, but failed to begin building work within the mandated onecyear period. In some instances, land was altered and later sold as sites after large-scale soil removal, it said. RAIPUR: The Economic Offence Wing (EOW) on Tuesday filed its charge sheet in connection with irregularities in the District Mineral Fund (DMF) in Chhattisgarh’s Korba district, alleging that the officials did not select vendors on merit but their willingness to pay bribes. The 6,000-page chargesheet mentioned nine names. (Representative file image) Among the state government officials named in EOW’s 6,000-page charge sheet are former Korba collector Ranu Sahu, former deputy secretary at then chief minister Bhupesh Baghel’s office Saumya Chaurasia, and Maya Warrior, assistant commissioner at the Tribal Development Department. A survey by the online platform LocalCircles found that around 66 per cent of businesses surveyed across 159 districts in India admitted to paying bribes to obtain government services. The report notes that digitising and enhancing CCTV cameras have not deterred corrupt practices in government offices. (REUTERS) Business firms claimed that they bribed different types of government entities in the last 12 months to qualify as suppliers, secure quotations and orders, and collect payments. According to a PTI report, the survey was conducted between May 22 and November 30. The report claimed that 75 per cent of the total bribes reported were paid to officials of government departments such as legal, metrology, food, drug, health, etc. “Many also reported paying bribes to GST officials, pollution department, municipal corporation and power department,” the report said. Three inspectors from the Motor Transport Department were booked by the state Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Wednesday for allegedly accepting bribes from personnel within their own Regional Transport Office (RTO). According to officials, the three inspectors, who were part of the procurement department  in the Transport Commissioner’s office, would send proposals to acquire interception vehicles from the government. During the distribution of these vehicles to RTOs across the state, the trio allegedly demanded Rs 25,000 per vehicle under the pretext of covering expenses. The ACB has identified the three inspectors as Parikshit Patil, Santosh Kathar, and Dhanraj Shinde, all of whom are posted at the Transport Commissioner’s office in Mumbai. The agency’s inquiry revealed that the inspectors had illicitly collected around Rs 46.47 lakh, claiming the funds were for additional work on 187 newly acquired vehicles. An ACB officer stated, “In July, we received a complaint from personnel within the Motor Transport Department, alleging that these three individuals were illegally pocketing money.” The complaint detailed that the complainant and other RTO personnel had handed over Rs …
