Budget document shows BMC has 7,453 teachers for 2,76,115 students in 931 primary schools The document uploaded on the official BMC website shows the BMC has 7,453 teachers catering to 2,76,115 students (1,41,013 boys and 1,35,102 girls) of 931 primary schools of 8 mediums viz: Marathi, Hindi, Urdu, English, Gujarati, Kannada, Telugu and Tamil. Among them, 77 teachers are engaged with 845 specially abled students (578 boys and 267 girls) in 19 BMC special schools. BMC has 377 private aided schools receiving grants where 2,367 teachers are working. These schools are imparting education to 96,513 students (47,721 boys and 48,792 girls) of Std. 1st to Std. 4th. At present, 900 classes of kindergarten, 168 pre-primary classes of MPS and 115 pre-primary classes of CBSE, ICSE, and IB & IGCSE Boards are being conducted by BMC. A total of 40,595 students are enrolled in these classes. With the elections slated to take place later this year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) budget for the financial year 2024 – 2025 bears a strong political hue, with the Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s imprint looming large over the fiscal sheets. Key new projects — aimed at improving weaker sections — have been named after Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray and Sena leader Anand Dighe, amidst a deliberate push by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to portray himself as a natural claimant of the life and legacy of both the Sena stalwarts. The budget has also announced a slew of social impact initiatives in its budget, targeting economically weaker sections of the society. A total fund of Rs 507.98 crore has been allocated for various financial assistance schemes in the city. Named after Shinde’s mentor Anand Dighe, the civic body has introduced the new ‘Dharmaveer Anand Dighe Divyang Financial Assistance scheme’ under which an allocation of Rs 111.83 crores for persons with physical disabilities has been made.
