HC seeks Centre stand on plea seeking FIFA World Cup broadcast

New Delhi, The Delhi High Court on Tuesday sought the stand of the Centre and Prasar Bharti on a petition seeking the broadcast of the FIFA World Cup 2026, which is scheduled to commence on June 11. HC seeks Centre stand on plea seeking FIFA World Cup broadcast Avdhesh Bairwa, a lawyer, sought directions to the central government to acquire the broadcasting rights for the opening match, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the final in favour of Prasar Bharti as an interim measure. By way of final relief, the petitioner prayed that rights should be acquired for all 104 matches. Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav issued notice on the petition and listed it for hearing on May 20. “Issue notice. Let him take instructions. Let the matter be called out next week,” the judge said. Why Indian broadcasters are shying away from FIFA World Cup

Why Indian broadcasters are shying away from FIFA World Cup

4 min readApr 24, 2026 10:55 PM IST Forty-six days remain until kick-off between Mexico and South Africa, and no Indian broadcaster is publicising that they will show the football World Cup yet. FIFA, which first quoted $100 million for broadcasting rights for two editions (2026 and 2030), have now been forced to drag down the asking price to $35 million. Those in the know of developments in Indian sports broadcasting, delved into the different reasons why they are shying away from the quadrennial showpiece, one of the most-watched sporting events in the world. “There was a huge mismatch between the seller’s (FIFA) asking price, and the advertising revenue that a buyer could generate. ISL tender ends without a single bid, major setback for AIFF’s commercial plans

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) faced a significant setback on Friday as the Indian Super League (ISL) tender process concluded without receiving a single bid. The Request for Proposal, launched on October 16, 2025, aimed to identify a new commercial partner for the league’s broadcasting, sponsorship, digital, and merchandising rights. In an official statement, the AIFF confirmed that “no bids were received within the stipulated timeframe” despite the deadline for submissions ending on November 7. The federation added that its Bid Evaluation Committee will meet over the weekend to “review the situation and deliberate on the future course of action.” The tender process had attracted initial interest from four entities. However, despite multiple clarifications, extensions, and revisions, including the release of Corrigendum 4 to address 234 queries, none of the participants submitted a final proposal. FSDL, which previously held the ISL’s commercial rights under the Master Rights Agreement (MRA), also refrained from submitting a bid. The failed tender leaves the AIFF with an urgent need to reassess its commercial strategy for the ISL, which …
