3 min readMumbaiJun 18, 2026 08:14 PM IST Karisma Kapoor and Soni Razdan recently shared screen space in Abhinay Deo’s crime thriller show Brown on ZEE5, where they played daughter and mother. They also had a third scene partner in tow, the aunt, played by Helen. Both Karisma and Soni go a long way back with the legendary actor. While Karisma’s family members have worked closely with Helen, Soni’s connection dates back to the early days of her relationship with Mahesh Bhatt. Soni’s first memory of Helen “I actually met Helen many years ago, when I was dating my husband. We used to go on double dates — Helen and Salim sahab, and Mahesh and me,” Soni Razdan tells SCREEN, giggling. This was back in the mid-1980s, when Soni’s husband and filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt collaborated with Helen’s husband and veteran screenwriter Salim Khan on the 1986 crime thriller Naam, starring Sanjay Dutt, Kumar Gaurav, and Amrita Singh. “We used to go to his house very often, and go to Helen’s house once in a while. …

Abhinay Deo on convincing Helen to make her acting comeback with Brown: I was really hoping she would say yes

Veteran actor Helen marked her return to the screens after over a decade recently with the web series Brown, co-starring Karisma Kapoor. Abhinay Deo on convincing Helen for Brown Ask Abhinay Deo if it was challenging to convince Helen to break her hiatus and he shares, “First of all, it was, for me, a fanboy moment, because I’ve grown up watching Helen ma’am right from her yesteryear mind-blowing songs that she has performed on. I really felt that that role (in the show), while it was nothing like she’s played ever before, it something that I really felt and hope that she said yes to. The interesting part was that I don’t know how it transpired, but she said yes, and I was ecstatic. I …

Karisma Kapoor-led Brown faced 3-year delay, was re-edited, says writer Mayukh Ghosh: ‘We were in limbo’ | Interview

Crime thrillers traditionally revolve around one question: Who did it? But for writer Mayukh Ghosh, that was never the most important mystery at the heart of Brown. The psychological crime thriller, starring Karisma Kapoor as detective Rita Brown, began as a conventional whodunit before evolving into something far more layered. Speaking to Hindustan Times, Mayukh revealed that the show’s defining creative choice was shifting the focus away from identifying the killer and toward understanding their motive. Brown starring Karisma Kapoor survived delay with rework. Brown was originally a straightforward whodunit According to Mayukh, the version of Brown he first encountered was quite different from what audiences eventually saw. “Zee Studios wanted to revive an old project based on the novel City of Death and they were looking for someone to pick it up,” he says. “At that time it was a pure whodunit.” But the team soon felt that a simple killer-identity mystery wouldn’t hold up for today’s viewers. “Once I came on board, we realised audiences today are cinema-literate. A pure whodunit might not …

Brown review: Karisma Kapoor is trapped in a cliche-ridden thriller | Web-series News

3 min readJun 5, 2026 03:49 PM IST Brown review: Right from the beginning, Brown works hard at justifying it being named after its lead character. Rita Brown (Karisma Kapoor), a cop leading a murder investigation, is a workaholic– that she’s an alcoholic is part of it– who never takes her eyes off the ball, exhibiting the kind of single-minded obsession needed for a series like this to come alive. And in its first couple of episodes, this 7-episode show, which has been hanging fire for a while, does grab our attention. The killing is brutal and seems ritualistic, hinting at patterns adopted by serial killers. Rita Brown’s trusty deputy Arjun Sinha (Surya Sharma), while capable of taking orders from a woman, isn’t as happy taking care of his ageing dad (K K Raina), who is slowly losing his faculties. And Rita herself, forgetting to eat, but never to drink, keeps fobbing off her caring mother (Soni Razdan) and grandma (Helen) when it comes to their joint efforts of making her move on from a …
