Raising serious concern over pollution in the Buddha Nullah, Rajya Sabha MP and environmentalist Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal has criticised the functioning of civic agencies after the Haibowal Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) remained non-operational for the past 25 days and a temporary treatment system near the Tajpur Dairy Complex collapsed. Barely hours after cabinet minister Dr Ravjot Singh held a review meeting on the Buddha Nullah rejuvenation project, three previously sealed outlets near the Tajpur Road dairy complex were found open again, discharging cow dung directly into the drain that feeds the waterbody. Municipal commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal, when contacted, said strict directions have been issued. “I have directed officials to immediately close the outlets as this is violating the orders,” he said. A field report has been sought from the sanitary and enforcement wings and action will be taken against those responsible, he added. The outlets, which were sealed as part of pollution-control measures, were reportedly reopened over the past two days, civic body officials said. Buddha Nullah pollution has been a persistent issue for the locals and authorities. (Manish/HT) They added the action was taken for alleged violations of pollution norms by the units dumping untreated wastewater into the Buddha Nullah. According to the officials, the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) prepared a list of dyeing units violating the norms and sent it to the PSPCL. The list includes units allegedly throwing ‘poisonous’ waste or cow dung and urine into the already polluted water body. The action taken in the last two months includes temporary and indefinite suspensions.
