(Photo: AP) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed his country’s military to further expand invasions of southern Lebanon, as regional tensions spike amid the US-Israel war on Iran. “I have just instructed to further expand the existing security buffer zone. We are determined to fundamentally change the situation in the north of Israel,” Netanyahu said in a video statement from the Northern Command on Sunday, pushing forward his country’s stated bid to replicate the “Gaza model” of occupation. Push to expand ‘buffer zone’ Netanyahu said the move is part of efforts to strengthen Israel’s security along its northern border. The expansion of the so-called buffer zone comes as Israeli troops continue operations in southern Lebanon amid ongoing tensions.

After Ramnadi-Mula devrai row, citizens seek protection for buffer zone; PMC says it is outside RFD | Pune News

4 min readPuneUpdated: Mar 23, 2026 07:35 PM IST Around a year ago, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) decided to revise its plans for the Riverfront Development (RFD) along the Ramnadi-Mula devrai, which residents and activists have highlighted as a sacred grove. This forest, spread over around eight hectares, stretches across 800 metres of the riverbank. In its revised plan, PMC said that no trees would be felled at the site. Now, environmentalists and residents are drawing attention to the buffer zone of the devrai, where old-growth trees are vulnerable to RFD-related construction. “Pune’s forest cover is only about 16–22 per cent, which is far below the national target of 33 per cent set under the National Forest Policy. The Pune Forest Division’s work plan prescribes documentation and protection of sacred groves. Last year, the Ram-Mula Devrai was saved, underscoring its ecological and cultural importance as a sacred grove and vital community space with rich wildlife. The buffer zones and boundaries of this Devrai are crucial for its survival, and the riparian trees around it …

European Troops, 800-Mile Buffer Zone In Trump’s Ukraine Peace Plan: Report

US President-elect Donald Trump, who has repeatedly boasted that he could end the Russia-Ukraine war in his first 24 hours in power, is likely to call on European soldiers to enforce an 800-mile buffer zone between the Russian and Ukrainian armies. Trump’s peace plan, outlined by three of his staffers, would see the current front line frozen in place and Ukraine agreeing to shelve its ambition to join NATO, The Telegraph reported this week. In exchange, the US, which has been one of the biggest contributors of aid and arms to Kyiv, would reportedly pump Ukraine full of weapons to deter Russia from restarting the war. The US would also not contribute troops to patrol and enforce the resulting buffer zone. “We are not sending American men and women to uphold peace in Ukraine. And we are not paying for it. Get the Poles, Germans, British and French to do it,” a member of Trump’s team said, The Telegraph reported. Before the US presidential election, in which Trump defeated his Democratic rival Vice President Kamala …

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh speaks to the media in state capital Imphal on Saturday Imphal/Guwahati: There is no such thing as a “buffer zone” in Manipur and all forces can go anywhere in the state, Chief Minister N Biren Singh told reporters in the state capital Imphal today. The Chief Minister also condemned “new groups that have sprang up” in recent times for “creating panic among people to run their agenda”, and pointed at the Kuki-Zo group Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF), two days after protesters in the hill district Churachandpur set on fire government office buildings over the suspension of a head constable from their community. The head constable, Siamlalpaul, was suspended over allegations that he had been training an armed group, who call themselves “village defence volunteers”. His selfie and a video at a hill bunker, which had gone viral on social media, also contained visuals of young people armed with military-grade assault rifles, some with attachments like silencers and scopes; sniper rifles, and even submachine guns like the German-origin MP5. …

Buffer zone | A participatory mapping exercise

Kerala Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine addresses a buffer zone review meeting at the Idukki Collectorate on January 3, 2023. Photo: Special Arrangement The demarcation of a 1-km buffer zone around the protected forests in Kerala on the direction of the Supreme Court has raised serious concerns in society. While the creation and maintenance of buffer zone around ecologically sensitive areas are considered essential, the exercise is often beset by a paucity of reliable ground-level data. In its special report on Climate Change and Land- Summary for Policy Makers (2019), the International Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) stressed on improving sustainable land management ‘by increasing the availability and accessibility of data’ and termed it one of the near-term actions to address the issue of climate change and adaptation. However, micro-level land use statistics in Kerala, or for that matter of the entire country, is mostly conjectural with marginal ground input. According to official statistics, Kerala has 11,525 km2, or 29.7% of its total geographical area under forest cover. The category of dense and degraded forest …
