Mumbai: BJP MLA Ram Kadam on Tuesday warned that any studio in Maharashtra that provides space for stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra’s performances would face bulldozer action if any illegal construction is found on its premises. Mr Kadam accused Kamra of making controversial remarks with political backing, alleging that he is being endorsed by Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray. His comments came after Kamra refused to apologise for calling Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde a “traitor.” The controversy escalated after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) carried out a demolition drive against illegal structures at The Habitat Club in the Unicontinental Hotel, the venue where Kamra performed. The Supreme Court on Monday criticised the Uttar Pradesh government over the demolition of houses in Prayagraj, saying it had shocked its conscience. Maharashtra Chief Minister (CM) Devendra Fadnavis stated on Saturday that a bulldozer “will roll if necessary” when asked whether those involved in the Nagpur violence would face action similar to the “Uttar Pradesh style.” Addressing the media, Fadnavis affirmed that the government would recover the cost of damage caused during the unrest from the rioters. The Uttar Pradesh Electricity Department, in coordination with the local police, launched a bulldozer drive to clear illegal encroachments in Sambhal. Sub-divisional officer (SDO) Santosh Tripathi confirmed that several structures, including homes, had encroached on public property, with some cases involving blatant violations such as electricity poles being located inside residential buildings. Speaking to ANI, Tripathi explained, “A few residents are involved in electricity theft without proper connections or meters. In some cases, older mechanical meters, which were discontinued 15 years ago, were still in use. These meters are being removed, and action is being taken to address the encroachments.” The SDO elaborated that the removal of outdated meters is part of a broader effort to tackle unauthorised power usage in the area. He added, “There was an official order over 15 years ago stating that mechanical meters would no longer be installed. However, some undetected older meters still exist. Five bulldozers were used to demolish illegal constructions made at Noori Jama Masjid in Fatehpur district of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday. There was no stoning, no firing nor lathicharge. There were no protests. The demolition was done peacefully in the presence of the district magistrate, SP, SDM and Tehsildar. The portions of the 185-year-old mosque which were built after encroaching on government land were demolished. Local Muslim residents said, the original mosque was smaller, but over the years there were encroachments to build ‘minars’ and shops. According to the local administration,  bulldozers were used as per recent guidelines given by the Supreme Court.  Noori Masjid was built in 1839. Over the years, more additions were made by encroaching upon government land. Four months ago, on August 17, the state Public Works Department issued notices to 139 persons, including the Noori Masjid Management Committee and directed them to remove illegal encroachments within 45 days.
