Evil Dead Burn: How much gore is too much gore on screen? This blood-filled nightmare is not for the faint-hearted

How much gore is too much gore? More importantly, why is our dear Central Board of Film Certification comfortable allowing a detailed decapitation in a Hollywood film like Evil Dead Burn to be screened, but objects to a similarly brutal head-smashing sequence in the recent runaway hit Obsession, or even in Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar? That’s a debate for another day. A still from Evil Dead Burn. Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead Burn is as gory, horrifying and shocking as they come. Yet, it’s also immensely entertaining. Before long, the family turns on Alice, holding her responsible for Will’s death, and all hell breaks loose. On the surface, Evil Dead Burn plays out like a blood-soaked …

Raakh review: Akash Makhija, Aamir Bashir knock the wind out of you in impactful slow burn on the banality of evil

Raakh Creators: Anusha Nandakumar, Sandeep Saket, Prosit Roy Cast: Ali Fazal, Sonali Bendre, Aamir Bashir, Akash Makhija, Ramandeep Yadav, Anshul Chauhan, Rakesh Bedi, Divya Sharma, and Vivaan Sharma Rating: ★★★⯪ It is a daunting prospect to create drama from tragedy in today’s time. The proliferation of OTT services has exposed Indian viewers to quality shows and films from around the world. In a bid to fight that edge from across the seas, Indian makers have often resorted to gore and violence, further desensitising the audiences. For a show to shake the viewer in today’s time takes work, both from the writers and the actors. That Raakh manages that is a feat in itself. That it does so without resorting to graphic brutality or discarding sensitivity needs to be applauded. The show is by no means perfect. It takes its sweet time getting to the point, prolonging the slowness of the slow-burning to a point where it is painstakingly slow. And yet, it manages to deliver a payoff that is both shocking and emotional. Raakh review: …

Jharia coal fires may burn hotter, emit more greenhouse gases than thought

An underground fire burning in Jharia, Jharkhand, August 2024. | Photo Credit: Amit Bhelari/The Hindu Fires have burnt beneath the Jharia coal fields in Jharkhand for decades now, releasing smoke and gases through cracks in the ground. And according to a new study, parts of this underground fire system may burn hotter and release more greenhouse gases than previously estimated. Researchers from the U.K. and India, including the CSIR-Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CIMFR), reported in a May 18 paper in Communications Earth & Environment that the collapse structures created when underground fires consume coal seams and destabilise the rock above them can stretch vertically for more than 100 m through the earth, venting hot gases into the air. When mining exposes coal to oxygen, natural oxidation reactions can trigger underground fires that smoulder for decades. Previous estimates suggested fires in the region already emitted copious greenhouse gases, but scientists have struggled to track them accurately because the fires spread irregularly. The new study focused on the Ena, Bastacolla, and Tisera collieries. In …

Kara movie review: Dhanush single-handedly carries this slow burn heist thriller | Movie-review News

Heist genre is one of Tamil cinema’s most reliable formats, and also one of its most abused. Done well, it is all architecture, every scene a load-bearing wall, every character a moving part in a machine that the audience can feel clicking into place. Done badly, it is just people running. Kara leans closer to the former than the latter, which in itself is an achievement worth acknowledging. Vignesh Raja understands that a heist is only as interesting as what it costs the person pulling it off, and he spends most of his film making sure you feel that cost. Set in Ramanathapuram, 1991, we enter a world where petrol is scarce, the Gulf War is rattling economies far beyond the Middle East, and a man named Karasaami, played by Dhanush, is trying very hard to not become who he once was. That is where Kara drops you into, and for a good while, it is a world worth being in. Old associations resurface, old debts come calling, and Kara finds himself doing the one …

During the filming of the climax battle scene, the set of the movie was destroyed by a massive fire in April 2018. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, but the incident led to a reported loss of around Rs 8 crore. In a recent interview, SFX supervisor Vishal Tyagi recalled the fire, which the team had to watch for two hours because there were zero safety measures on the set. During a candid chat with Hindi Rush, he shared, “We were shooting for Kesari in Hawai. We had to film a big explosion. Initially, we were about to put a separate wall, but didn’t have the budgets. So, we decided to do the explosion on the wall of the set only. After that incident, I learnt how to say no on that set, I never used to say no earlier.” He further added, “There were no safety measures on the set. …
