3 min readFeb 9, 2026 09:25 PM IST In a denting move for Indian badminton, Syed Modi International Super 300 tournament has been demoted to Super 100 category by Badminton World Federation on Monday while India Open kept it’s 750 status despite multiple controversies in 2026 edition for the 2027-2030 cycle. The change is part of the larger restructuring of the BWF World Tour finals structure with BWF promoting Denmark Open to Super 1000 from Super 750. In the new six tier system of BWF World Tour, BWF World Tour Finals event remains the top event followed by five Super 1000s, five Super 750s, nine Super 500s, eight Super 300s and eight Super 100s. 3 min readUpdated: Feb 9, 2026 04:19 PM IST Double Olympic gold medallist Viktor Axelsen might’ve scored his biggest podium win yet. After repeatedly pointing to the need of the sport’s World Tour needing reforms, it turns out BWF was always in the process of bringing them in – starting with top tournaments spread over 11 days, with two weekends thrown in, to ease playing conditions for players. Injuries are rife in badminton, and literally decimating entire top fields as competition is carried out week after week, with shuttlers playing five days straight. Not any more – from 2027 onwards atleast. Badminton World Federation in a release, announced that number of Super 1000 tournaments held across Asia and Europe goes up to 5, and will feature an expanded format – running over two weeks instead of one. “Singles events will include 48 players competing in group and then elimination rounds, while doubles events will follow a 32-pair knockout draw. Each tournament will take place over 11 days, spanning two weekends,” the BWF said. Here are …

Badminton World Federation acknowledges issues with ‘cleanliness, hygiene and animal control’

After incidents of bird droppings on the court, spotting of a monkey in the stands, and players complaining about poor air quality, hygiene at the stadium and cold conditions at the India Open, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) acknowledged issues regarding ‘general cleanliness, hygiene and animal control’. However, the BWF backed the IG Stadium as the venue to host the World Championships in August. The India Open witnessed a monkey sighting in the stands on Wednesday and play being halted twice during a match on Thursday because of bird droppings falling from above on the court. “The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has engaged with players and teams during India Open 2026 to review conditions at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in New Delhi,” the governing body said in a statement. “The feedback received — both positive and constructive — is invaluable in shaping the best possible environment for this tournament and future championships. We also acknowledge the comments shared by players and the subsequent media coverage.” The BWF, however, added that the Indira Gandhi Indoor …

After transforming Thai badminton, new BWF chief Leeswadtrakul’s task will be to unlock the sport’s global potential | Badminton News

It’s not like authentic sports cities like Hyderabad in India with wide exposure to several disciplines didn’t try it. Just that smaller towns in Thailand, and the capital Bangkok alike, could completely barricade busy roads and completely close off traffic on Sundays, so that they turned into makeshift sports streets, where they consistently played sports. Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, the then 55-year-old businesswoman, a self-made corporate success story, with a love for sport and the backing of Thai royals, was given a free mandate to pull off her Sport Street initiative and badminton, her adored sport, continued to blossom through impromptu shuttle games on streets. Elected president of the Badminton World Federation this week, at age 60 and only the second woman to rise high in that hierarchy, Leeswadtrakul is expected to bring the same wide view, inclusiveness, access and foresight to the sport she’s now globally taken charge of, years after picking an economics degree from University of Manchester.
