Satwik-Chirag dabble at Plan B; make Thailand Open finals after 3-set entertainer

Satwik-Chirag dabble at Plan B; make Thailand Open finals after 3-set entertainer

Could a sub-optimal, discomfiting but essential Plan B be deployed for a win? That was the question posed to Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty throughout their first set of the Thailand Open Super 500. They lost the battle 19-21, but won the war, 22-20, 21-16 for a 82 minute three-set tussle that gave them their first final of the season. Like lightening, the light of the win followed the sound of noise of the past fortnight. Plan B implied, allowing former World No 1s – now No 9, Malaysians Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izuddin to dictate the opening moves like in a chess game: the battle confined to flat, fast net exchanges, where the Indians would be starved of lifts, to smash down. A taut, tense front and midcourt war-theatre, where the Indians would necessarily need to defend Goh’s jump smashes if an errant lift ballooned up. Out of their comfort zone, it would also mean Satwik playing front court, and Chirag manning the back – an adapting measure that’s necessary to be trained …

PV Sindhu storms in quarters

Indian shuttler PV Sindhu had a comfortable outing as she stormed into the quarterfinals of the Thailand Open Super500 Tournament on Thursday. The 30-year-old got the better of Denmark’s Amalie Schulz 21-13, 21-15 in just 28 minutes. Top seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty advanced to the quarters after registering a comfortable win over Malaysia’s Goonting-Haikal 21-12, 21-19 in men’s. P.V. Sindhu takes voting seat on BWF Council as Athletes’ Commission Chair

P.V. Sindhu takes voting seat on BWF Council as Athletes’ Commission Chair

P.V. Sindhu has moved from the court to the council table. The two-time Olympic medallist and 2019 World Champion officially assumed a full voting seat on the Badminton World Federation Council following her election as Chair of the BWF Athletes’ Commission for the 2026–2029 term. She made her first appearance before the global badminton membership at the BWF Annual General Meeting in Horsens after completing the required vetting process. It marks the beginning of a formal governance role for a player who has been part of the BWF Athletes’ Commission since 2017 and has served as a BWF Integrity Ambassador since 2020. The significance of her Council seat lies partly in its rarity. It remains uncommon for an active athlete competing at the highest level of the sport to simultaneously hold a voting position within badminton’s global governance structure. Sindhu, who continues to compete on the World Tour, now participates in decisions that shape the direction of the sport globally not as a consultant, but as a voting member. She succeeds Indonesia’s Greysia Polii, who …

PV Sindhu gets voting rights on BWF Council after election as Chair of the BWF Athletes’ Commission

3 min readApr 27, 2026 02:32 PM IST PV Sindhu started her term as a voting member of the BWF Council after being elected as Chair of the BWF Athletes’ Commission, starting her governance role. The former World Champion and Olympic medallist and World Champion assumed a full voting position after completing the formal vetting process. Sindhu officially entered the BWF Council at the end of 2025. She made her first appearance before the global badminton membership during the BWF Annual General Meeting in Horsens, marking the beginning of her tenure within the sport’s highest governing body. Some of the pressing reforms Sindhu can look to push for are: prize money at World Championships and reducing the load of mandatory tournaments expected of top athletes, which will continue to cause injuries, be it in 15 points or 21. BWF has muscles through the 15-point system despite considerable opposition. The BWF Council plays a central role in guiding the strategic direction and governance of badminton worldwide. As a voting member of the Council, Sindhu will participate …

New scoring system: Badminton could lose its essence, say top Indian coaches

New scoring system: Badminton could lose its essence, say top Indian coaches

New Delhi: Badminton is set for a significant change as the new 3×15 scoring format (three games to 15 points) gets implemented next year, replacing the current 3×21 system. It is difficult to predict how the game will unfold because the format has not been tested at the sport’s highest level. What it does show is that matches will be shorter, with 18 fewer points that could reduce match time by roughly 30 minutes or more. What it also means is that shuttlers trailing by a few points will be under greater pressure, and comebacks will be that much tougher. And, of course, it will also be less of a test of a shuttler’s physical abilities. Indian badminton player Lakshya Sen. (AP) Games could be faster and more attacking, but the tactical depth in constructing and finishing points while testing an opponent’s mind and movement could witness a dip. There has been considerable debate over the shift, and the badminton fraternity at large has been apprehensive. The Badminton World Federation (BWF), however, says its tests …

Indian women beat Ukraine 4-1

The young Indian women’s team registered their first win of the Thomas & Uber Cup 2026 by defeating European Championships bronze medallist Ukraine 4-1 in their second Group A clash in Horsens, Denmark, on Sunday. Unnati Hooda began the proceedings for India with a 21-19, 22-20 win over Polina Buhrova before Junior World Championships silver medallist Tanvi Sharma doubled the lead by beating Yevheniia Kantemyr 21-12, 17-21, 21-10. Devika then put the result beyond doubt, beating Mariia Stoliarenko 23-21, 21-13. India’s only reversal came in the first women’s doubles where Kavipriya Selvam and Simran Singhi lost 11-21, 17-21 against Buhrova and Kantemyr before Sindhu and Tanisha Crasto completed the scoreline with a 21-18, 21-15 win over Stoliarenko and Sofiia Lavrova. Vimal Kumar on new scoring system

Vimal Kumar on new scoring system

The Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) decision to replace 3×21 with the new 3×15 points scoring system from January 2027 onwards has stirred a debate among the badminton fraternity. Former India coach and Dronacharya Awardee Vimal Kumar is at the forefront of calling the move ‘disappointing’. Taking to his social media, Kumar wrote: “Extremely disappointed with the Badminton World Federation (BWF) decision to alter the scoring system — and even more concerning is the overwhelming support it has received from Council members.” The BWF voted in favour of the new scoring system with an overwhelming 82.16% majority at its Annual General Meeting in Horsens, Denmark. A whopping 198 people voted in favour of moving to the shorter format, while 43 voted against it. “The existing format ensured a true level playing field across playing styles, especially in the premier events—Men’s and Women’s Singles—which have always embodied the very essence of our sport: skill, resilience, fitness, and mental strength,” he wrote. While the BWF argues the shorter format will improve scheduling, create more high-pressure moments, and help …

Badminton adopts new 3×15 scoring

Badminton adopts new 3×15 scoring

New Delhi: The Badminton World Federation (BWF) on Saturday adopted a new 3×15 (three games to 15 points) scoring system, a move aimed at bringing dynamic changes to the game making it shorter and intense while keeping the sport tuned to broadcast demands. The new scoring will come into effect from January, 4, 2027. Two-time Olympic medallist Pusarla V. Sindhu. (AFP) The last 20 years badminton has followed the 3×21 scoring. Over the years, players adapted to the scoring, and matches, replete with long, drawn-out rallies, were stretching on. Several players, coaches and officials in the badminton fraternity did not see any reason to change the current scoring which has been producing high-quality, intense matches. BWF, however, felt a change was needed as the current system was also affecting players’ health and burnout with matches often stretching 80-90 minutes. The proposal to adopt the new scoring system was put to a vote at the BWF Annual General Meeting in Denmark on Saturday and passed by the required two‑thirds majority of votes cast, the BWF said …
