Beed by-election: Wife of slain sarpanch loses bypoll; Swarupanand Deshmukh wins

In a closely watched by-election in Maharashtra’s Beed district, the wife of slain sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh was defeated in the race for the sarpanch post in Massajog village, reported the PTI. The result was declared on Wednesday following counting at the Kaij tehsil office. Returning Officer Santosh Karajwankar confirmed that Swarupanand Deshmukh secured victory by a margin of 92 votes. Ashwini Deshmukh, widow of the murdered sarpanch, had contested the election amid expectations of a sympathy wave. However, the electorate opted for Swarupanand Deshmukh, overturning the outcome of the previous election. In the last sarpanch poll, Santosh Deshmukh had narrowly defeated Swarupanand by just nine votes. Winner promises development and justice After the victory, Swarupanand Deshmukh said the mandate reflected people’s aspirations for development. He stated that while the election had been won, efforts to secure justice for the late Santosh Deshmukh would continue, adding that those responsible for the killing must be held accountable. Murder that triggered bypoll The by-election was necessitated after Santosh Deshmukh was brutally murdered on December 9, 2024. He was …

The seat became vacant after the demise of Assembly Speaker Biswabandhu Sen on December 26 last year. Mr. Sen first represented the constituency as a Congress nominee. Later, he joined the BJP ahead of the 2018 Assembly elections which saw installation of the BJP government for the first time in Tripura. State office of the Chief Electoral Officer has reportedly launched preparations for the bye-elections following directions from the election commission. The updated voter’s list for the Assembly constituency has been published. The total number of voters in the constituency, according to the published roll, is 46,143. Officials say there could be some change if any fault is found in the count. Mr. Sen …

Delhi MCD By-Election Result 2025 LIVE Updates: BJP Wins Chandni Chowk And Shalimar Bagh, AAP Secures Dakshinpuri

Delhi MCD By Election Results 2025 Live Updates: The counting of votes for the Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) by-elections is underway across 12 wards. Early trends show the BJP leading in six wards, including Shalimar Bagh, Dwarka, Greater Kailash, Mundka, Vinod Nagar, Ashok Vihar, and Dichaon Kalan. These results are being closely watched as a litmus test for Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, whose “Viksit Delhi” agenda faces its first major electoral challenge since the Assembly polls earlier this year. Why only 12 wards went to poll? Polling was held on 30 November across 580 booths, following 12 vacancies created when 11 councillors were elected to the Delhi Assembly and one to Parliament. Notably, the Shalimar Bagh-B ward became vacant as Gupta herself had been elected from there. Voter turnout varied across wards, with Chandni Mahal recording 55.93%, the highest, and Greater Kailash the lowest at 26.76%. The overall turnout was 38.51%, reflecting moderate public engagement. Stakes for major parties: In the 250-member MCD House, the BJP currently holds 116 seats, AAP 99, Indraprastha Vikas Party …

Govarthan The byelection to the Erode (East) Assembly constituency witnessed a 67.97% voter turnout on Wednesday (February 5, 2025). This is lower than the 74.79% recorded during the 2023 byelection held in the constituency. Polling began at 7 a.m. at 237 polling stations across 53 locations in the constituency and concluded at 6 p.m. The voter turnout at various intervals was as follows: 10.95% by 9 a.m., 26.03% by 11 a.m., 42.41% by 1 p.m., 53.63% by 3 p.m., and 64.02% by 5 p.m. The decline in voter turnout could be attributed to the AIADMK and BJP boycotting the byelection, as many of their functionaries and cadres refrained from voting. Though brisk polling was observed in the morning, the final hour saw a poor turnout at most polling stations. The counting of votes will take place at the Government College of Engineering in Chithode …

Caste, community-centric narrative at play in high stakes Milkipur byelection

Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav. | Photo Credit: PTI As the campaign for the Milkipur byelection under the Ayodhya district gains momentum, caste and community-centric narratives take centre stage. Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav who is pushing the PDA (pichada, Dalit, and alpasankhyak), acronym for backwards, Dalits, and minorities come out with data and figures claiming that these social groups has only 20% share in administrative appointments in Ayodhya district, calling upon these communities to vote unitedly for the SP. “The reverse math of favouritism in BJP rule, the PDA community, which is 90% in number, has only about 20% share in administrative appointments in Ayodhya and the dominant people, who are 10% in number, have got 80% appointments to administrative posts. There’s nothing more to say,” Mr. Yadav said on social media platform X. He also added a chart showing only three out of 13 administrative officials in Ayodhya are from these communities. Milkipur Vidhan Sabha seat is going for byelection on February 5 and the result will be declared on February 8. …

Byelection: BJP defeat has again exposed party’s lack of focus on strengthening cadre

Byelection: BJP defeat has again exposed party’s lack of focus on strengthening cadre

The washout in all three Assembly seats that went to the byelections in Karnataka has again exposed the lack of focus by the BJP on strengthening its cadre in the State despite its strategists repeatedly referring to this lacunae. Though it is common for the ruling party to have an advantage in byelections, there had been much curiosity around the three Assembly segments that went to the polls on November 13 as BJP leaders were confident that the issues they had raised ahead of the election — such as alleged irregularities in MUDA involving the Chief Minister and the Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki ST Development Corporation ‘scam’, besides the waqf land row — would have turned the tide in their favour. The BJP had launched Statewide campaigns on them. Little impact from campaigns But the results have shown that neither the BJP nor its ally, the JD(S), could gain significantly from those campaigns. This is being blamed on the party’s failure to strengthen its cadre. It is no secret that BJP top leaders have been concerned …

Byelection: Will another Bommai make it again in Shiggaon?

Byelection: Will another Bommai make it again in Shiggaon?

Bharath Bommai, BJP candidate | Photo Credit: SANJAY RITTI Calculations around castes and sub-castes tend to play a big role in the electoral arena in India, barring some exceptions. One such could be the Shiggaon Assembly constituency in Haveri district of Karnataka, where the Lingayat Panchamasali community is numerically strong followed by Muslims. However, former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, belonging to the numerically smaller Sadar Lingayat community, has won the seat four times in a row and is now canvassing for his son Bharath Bommai. The byelection was necessitated because of Mr. Basavaraj Bommai’s entry to the Lok Sabha. Muslim representation While Shiggaon had Muslim representation earlier, the last election when a Muslim candidate won was in 1999, when the Janata Dal (Secular) candidate Sayed Azeem Peer Khadri registered a victory. Mr. Khadri shifted to the Indian National Congress in 2004 and lost to an Independent candidate, Rajashekhar Sindhur, who in 2008 “sacrificed” his seat to make way for Mr. Basavaraj Bommai, who had quit the Janata Dal (United) and joined the BJP. The constituency, a …

Congress names Jayanta Bora as candidate for Behali by-election

Congress names Jayanta Bora as candidate for Behali by-election

In a move that has sparked friction within the opposition alliance in Assam, the Congress has named former BJP leader Jayanta Bora as its candidate for the by-election in Behali, even though he is yet to officially join the party. Bora, who recently resigned from the BJP after being denied a ticket, is expected to formally join the Congress later on Thursday, according to PTI. The announcement came in a statement from AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal on Wednesday, which named Bora as the Congress’ official candidate for the Behali constituency. This decision comes at a time when tensions are running high within the opposition alliance, Asom Sonmilito Morcha (ASOM), which comprises 16 parties, over who should contest the Behali seat.   As per the agreement within the ASOM bloc, four of the five seats up for by-election were to be contested by the Congress, with Behali designated for the CPI(ML) Liberation candidate. However, this decision faced opposition from a section of Congress leaders in Biswanath district, who preferred one of their own candidates for …
