An order was issued from the West Bengal Raj Bhavan Saturday requesting a refund of the expenses incurred for the 2024 convocation ceremony of Jadavpur University. The letter was sent two days after Bhaskar Gupta was removed from his position as interim vice chancellor. In the order, Governor C V Ananda Bose wrote that Gupta “deliberately violated mandatory provisions” of the Jadavpur University Act by going ahead with the annual convocation on December 24, 2024, “knowing fully well that such action is highly irregular, illegal, indisciplined and amounts to insubordination”. The order further stated, “You are aware that issue of degree/ certificates arising out of an illegally convened convocation is ab-initio null and void and will jeopardise the future of the students. INTERNET SERVICES have been suspended and prohibitory orders were issued in the Mothabari area and surrounding areas of West Bengal’s Malda following clashes between two communities on Thursday. A large contingent of police personnel has been posted in the area and 34 people have been arrested so far, police said. Well-known Bengali singer Pratul Mukhopadhyay known for ‘Ami Banglay Gaan Gai’, passed away at the SSKM hospital in Kolkata on Saturday. He was suffering from different age-related ailments. The 83-year-old singer is survived by his wife. His mortal remains were accorded full state honours at Rabindra Sadan Cultural Complex in the presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The chief minister accompanied by her cabinet colleague Aroop Biswas and director Goutam Ghose paid floral tributes to Mukherjee’s mortal remains.
