The woman, identified as Deepali Das (60), is a resident of Dholai in Cachar district. In a significant development in Assam’s efforts to address the issue of illegal infiltration, a woman from Cachar district in southern Assam who had earlier been declared a foreigner by a Foreigners’ Tribunal has now been granted Indian citizenship under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA). Despite being declared a foreigner earlier, she has secured citizenship under the provisions of the CAA. The woman, identified as Deepali Das (60), is a resident of Dholai in Cachar district. She was arrested on May 5, 2019, on suspicion of being an illegal immigrant. Her arrest followed an investigation report submitted by police officer Ajmal Hossain Laskar. File | Photo Credit: PTI The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Friday (February 21, 2026) notified another empowered committee comprising Census, postal and Intelligence Bureau (IB) officials in West Bengal to fast-track hundreds of pending citizenship applications under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) amid the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal. Several people belonging to the Matua community, comprising Hindu Namasudras with roots in Bangladesh, have applied for citizenship under the CAA as their names are not there in the 2002 electoral list, the threshold for the ongoing SIR exercise. Two persons, including a woman, have been granted Indian citizenship under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 (CAA), taking the count of people receiving citizenship under the Act to four in Assam, their lawyer said. “For the first time, a woman was granted citizenship under the Act in the northeastern State,” said senior advocate Dharmananda Deb, who had also been a member of the Foreigners’ Tribunal in Silchar. “The 40-year-old woman had entered India from Bangladesh in 2007 and had been living in Sribhumi, while the 61-year-old man, who came to the country in 1975, had been living in Cachar,” Mr. Deb said. Patna: The Indian government has granted citizenship to Sumitra Prasad alias Rani Saha, a woman who had been living in Bihar’s Ara city for 40 years. This marks the first instance in Bihar of citizenship being granted under the provisions of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and related rules. Sumitra, who resides on Chitra Toli Road in Ara and runs a grocery shop, has been living in India on a visa since 1985. Her journey to citizenship has been long and challenging, involving numerous visits to police stations and embassies over the decades. Her citizenship was finally approved under the State Level Empowered Committee as per sub-rule (1) of Rule 11A of the Citizenship Rules, 2009, and Rule 13A. Sumitra’s life story is deeply intertwined with historical events. At the age of five in 1970, she left for her aunt’s home in what was then undivided Pakistan (East Pakistan, later Bangladesh).
