CAF Chief Motsepe dismisses bias claims in Senegal-Morocco AFCON controversy

3 min readMar 19, 2026 03:48 PM IST Patrice Motsepe, the president of the Confederation of African Football, defended CAF’s stance after it stripped Senegal of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, even as the West African nation is all set to take the matter to sport’s highest court. “The disciplinary board took one decision. The appeals board took a totally different position. Senegal is going to appeal, which is very important. We will respect whatever decision is taken at the highest level,” the CAF chief said. Senegal’s football federation had a sharp response when they said the ruling was “unfair, unprecedented and unacceptable”, saying that it “brings discredit to African football”. They confirmed they will be taking their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne. The controversy centers around the shocking nature of the final match from January 18. The continental body’s Appeals Board found that the Lions of Teranga had forfeited their match after they briefly walked off the pitch when they protested late penalty given to Morocco. The …

Senegalese Football Federation condemns CAF verdict, heads to Court of Arbitration for Sport against ruling that handed 2025 AFCON title to Morocco

3 min readMar 18, 2026 11:28 AM IST The Senegalese Football Federation (La Fédération Sénégalaise de Football – FSF) condemned the decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which ruled that Senegal had been stripped of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and Morocco, their opponents in the final, had been declared champions. The Senegalese Football Federation called it an unfair, unprecedented, and unacceptable decision by CAF, which brings discredit to African football. The football body of Senegal said that it would challenge the decision by CAF in front of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland. CAS is an independent organisation that resolves sports disputes worldwide. Senegal were stripped of their title by CAF for walking off the pitch in protest at their opponents, Morocco, being awarded a late penalty. Morocco had lost that match 1-0 on January 18 in the country’s capital of Rabbat, but that was after Senegal had staged a walkout, led by their coach Pape Thiaw, over a contentious penalty that was awarded to …

CAF to investigate post-match violence at Africa Cup of Nations | Football News

Violent confrontations at the conclusion of two of the African Cup of Nations quarter-finals at the weekend are to be investigated with possible sanctions to be imposed, the Confederation of African Football said. Opposing players jostled with each other after Morocco beat Cameroon in Rabat on Friday and when Nigeria overcame Algeria in Agadir on Saturday. Video on social media showed the referee being pursued down the tunnel by Algerian players after their 2-0 defeat, and altercations among journalists from the two countries in the mixed zone, an area where reporters can interview players after the match. “CAF has collected recent match reports and video evidence indicating potentially unacceptable behaviour from some players and officials and has opened an investigation,” a statement said. “CAF has referred the matters to the Disciplinary Board for investigation and has called for appropriate action to be taken if the identified persons were to be found guilty of any wrongdoing. “CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organisers. Appropriate …

Venue dispute overshadows CAF Confederation Cup title decider

A CAF Confederation Cup final venue dispute has overshadowed the second leg between Simba of Tanzania and Renaissance Berkane of Morocco in the Indian Ocean island of Zanzibar on Sunday. HT Image Hosts Simba, who trail 2-0 after the first leg last weekend, wanted to stage the return match at the 60,000-seat Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam. But an inspection of the national stadium in the Tanzanian commercial capital by the Confederation of African Football ruled that it was unsuitable for the title decider. Instead, CAF ordered the second leg to be played at the Amaan Stadium, a 15,000-seater in Zanzibar, which is a three-hour ferry journey from Dar es Salaam. A popular tourist resort, Zanzibar is a Tanzanian archipelago off the coast of east Africa and consists of two main islands and many small ones. The origins of the venue dispute can be traced to Benjamin Mkapa Stadium last month where Simba beat Egyptian visitors Al Masry on penalties in a quarter-final after a 2-2 aggregate tie. A pitch littered with divots …
