Tamil Nadu election 2026: From walls to screens — a leap for political campaigning

Today, street cred is earned by putting out memes and images on social media. | Photo Credit: Representative image Sometimes, civic sense can get in the way of culture. With serious clampdowns on posters, festoons, banners, wall paintings and advertisements by the Election Commission and civic bodies, it does indeed feel like the culture of elections itself in Tamil Nadu has changed, dramatically. From walls, they have migrated to feeds. Posters and wall paintings were iconic in elections in the past in Tamil Nadu. They were more than mere advertisements for the party or candidates — they evolved form as a multitude of purposes rolled in one, starting with the very basic marking of physical territory, but also equally importantly, an identity system, candidate branding and propaganda. Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad residents see mega ‘noisy Sunday’ as campaigning peaks

The political atmosphere across Maharashtra’s Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad turned intense and noisy on Sunday as parties pulled out all stops on the final weekend ahead of the civic polls scheduled for Thursday, January 15. With only two days left before the official end of campaigning on Tuesday, January 13, candidates and party leaders intensified their outreach through rallies, roadshows, bike rallies, and door-to-door meetings. The final Sunday before polling emerged as a full-scale “mega campaign day”, with society meetings, corner meetings, and ward-level processions unfolding simultaneously across residential and commercial pockets of the twin cities. Campaign vehicles fitted with loudspeakers, traditional dhol-tasha troupes, and high-decibel music systems were widely used to draw attention. Senior leaders were also active on the ground. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis led a roadshow in Bhosari, while Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar released the Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP’s) civic poll manifesto for Pimpri-Chinchwad. Sharad Pawar slams Mahayuti alliance for ‘money-centric’ campaigning for polls

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP-SP) president Sharad Pawar on Thursday delivered a sharp rebuke to Mahayuti leaders, accusing them of running a “money-driven” campaign for the Maharashtra local body elections, reported the IANS. He alleged that members of the ruling alliance were seeking votes on the promise of funds rather than on the basis of their performance. “There is now a contest over who can offer more money,” Pawar remarked, noting that informal “poll fronts or groups” had emerged across several districts. “Votes are being solicited on the basis of money and funds — this is not a healthy sign,” Pawar said,m according to the IANS. His comments come amid growing controversy over recurring references to development funds by senior Mahayuti figures — including Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, as well as BJP and Shinde Sena ministers — during campaign rallies. These leaders have openly told voters that development funding would be assured only if their candidates were elected. The dispute intensified after Ajit Pawar’s recent speech in Malegaon Nagar Panchayat, where he promised generous funds …
