Collector tells HC 85% of city canal desilting work completed

The Ernakulam District Collector has informed the Kerala High Court that 85% of desilting works of the city canals have been completed. The report was filed in a petition seeking a report from the State regarding the preparation of a permanent mechanism for the proper management of the Thevara-Perandoor Canal. The court had directed the Collector to inform the steps taken for de-clogging the canal beside the KSRTC bus stand and the Perandoor Canal, expediting the Mullassery Canal works, and repairing the drains at Madhava Pharmacy Junction, where M.G. Road branches off from Banerjee Road. The government has sanctioned ₹5.37 crore for the completion of the remaining 175-metre stretch of the Mullassery canal. Funds have been sanctioned to the Kerala Water Authority, Kerala State Electricity Board and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited to shift their utilities from the canal. The work is expected to begin after the rainy season. The deceased was identified as Emil Sunil, 21, a native of Manarcadu in Kottayam. He had been on ventilator support since the incident. With this, the death toll in the accident rose to three. According to police, the car was travelling from Mahmoodpur to Deeg when the accident occurred near the Nahla Deviya bridge late on Wednesday night. “There is a sharp turn on the road. The driver possibly failed to negotiate the turn at high speed and hit a structure ahead,” Superintendent of Police (Rural) Suresh Chandra Rawat said. The vehicle overturned and plunged into a nearly six-metre-wide canal, he said, adding that it overturned again after falling into the water.
