‘There were better players but you carried Shubman Gill till the very end and dropped him’: Former India batter slams selectors for ‘zero planning’ | Cricket News

Former India batter Mohammed Kaif minced no words as he lambasted the Ajit Agarkar-led national selection committee for botching up their preparatory laps for the 2026 T20 World Cup and taking a last-minute decision to drop Shubman Gill and reinstate Axar Patel as the vice-captain of the side. Last Saturday, Gill was stunningly axed from the 15-member T20 World Cup, provisionally selected for the tournament, announced at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. Gill had featured in every T20I had played since the Asia Cup in September but failed to produce any knock of note, with a best of 47. In the recent five-match series against South Africa, Gill produced scores of 4, 0 and a run-a-ball 28 before picking up a toe injury that ruled him out of the last two games. In his absence, wicket-keeper Sanju Samson returned to the opening spot alongside Abhishek Sharma for the first time since January 2025 and made an instant impression with his quick-fire 37. Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Bande Mataram’ carried a message that ‘Vande Mataram’ did not

December 11, 2025 06:15 AM IST First published on: Dec 11, 2025 at 06:15 AM IST There are certain instances when poems or songs transcend their immediate contexts and become slogans. They represent public sentiment, face censorship and political contestations, and carry memories of multiple renditions. For colonial and post-colonial India, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s ‘Vande Mataram’, first written and published in Bangadarshan in 1875, later included in his novel Anandamath, and turned into a song by Rabindranath Tagore, is one such. So, when both Houses of Parliament spent hours debating the poem’s journey, it was inevitable that there would be omissions, misinterpretations, anachronisms and ahistorical spinning of facts, tuned to contemporary ideological tensions. In the debate, however, conspicuously missing was the story of another ‘Vande Mataram’, or ‘Bande Mataram’ as it is pronounced in Bengali, a song written and composed by Tagore. It was used as a slogan of unity on the streets of undivided Bengal when Lord Curzon announced Bengal’s partition in 1905. Far from the religious invocation of Chattopadhyay’s ‘Vande Mataram’, Tagore’s song …

Caste: how a Spanish word, carried by the Portuguese, came to describe social order in India | Research News

Caste: how a Spanish word, carried by the Portuguese, came to describe social order in India | Research News

During the Parliamentary proceedings in 2013, Indian-origin Bhikhu Parekh, a Member of the House of Lords in the United Kingdom, remarked: “How do you define caste? Sociologists have tried for 200 years, ever since the Portuguese invented the word caste. It is not an English but a Portuguese word; when they came to India, they found that we were classified in a certain way and called it caste. In India, caste is very much in flux thanks to globalisation, urbanisation and so on, and in Britain it is even more so. Castes are therefore difficult not only to define but to distinguish.” The word ‘caste’ is often used to describe India’s unique social system, but the term did not come from India.
