Over 32,000 traffic e-challan cases were settled on day one of Fine Concession scheme on Sunday. The Police Department collected ₹96.73 lakh through various prescribed modes of payment. The rebate of 50% was introduced by the State government for pending traffic e-challan cases registered by the police. The scheme came into effect on Sunday. The police said the initiative is intended to encourage motorists to clear long-pending traffic fines and improve compliance with traffic regulations. The Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ebola outbreak has climbed to 782 confirmed cases and 181 deaths, health authorities said on Sunday, as the virus spread to new health zones in the country’s conflict-hit east and crossed into neighbouring Uganda. The current outbreak is being driven by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus. The outbreak was declared on May 15, though health officials have said the virus had likely been circulating undetected for weeks before it was identified. The current outbreak is being driven by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, a rare variant for which there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment. Thiruvananthapuram Corporation BJP councillor R. Sugathan faces 19 criminal cases

R. Sugathan, the BJP councillor representing Vazhottukonam ward in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, is facing as many as 19 criminal cases, including several serious charges such as attempted murder. According to details released by the Home department, 18 cases have been registered against him at the Vattiyurkavu police station and one case at Nedumangad police station. In all 19 cases, Sugathan has been named as the first accused. Among the charges are four cases of attempted murder, along with offences including rioting, causing hurt and criminal intimidation. The police have already filed charge sheets in 18 of the cases, official sources said. Prior to the latest instance in which provisions of the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA) was invoked against Mr. Sugathan, the district authorities had previously issued externment orders against him in 2023 and 2025. The Vattiyurkavu police had recently arrested the councillor in a late-night dramatic operation after evading law for over a month following a temple clash. Kerala reports seven more Shigella infections, total cases rise to 16

Seven more cases of Shigella infection have been confirmed among students in Kerala`s Wayanad district, taking the total number of infected children to 16, health officials said on Friday, reported the PTI. The officials have intensified disease surveillance, awareness campaigns and preventive measures as efforts continue to contain the outbreak. District Medical Officer Dr K T Rekha said the health condition of all 16 infected students is currently satisfactory. She advised that children showing symptoms should minimise contact with others to prevent further spread of the infection. Parents have also been urged to seek medical attention immediately if new symptoms develop and avoid self-medication, the news agency reported. The Health Department has strengthened infectious disease surveillance and stepped up preventive and awareness activities across the district. Officials have urged residents to strictly follow health advisories, maintain personal hygiene and ensure cleanliness of food, drinking water and surrounding areas. Monsoon triggers rise in Shigella, Chikungunya and influenza cases in Kerala

As the monsoon gains strength across Kerala, health authorities are witnessing a surge in communicable diseases, with cases of Shigella, Chikungunya, influenza, leptospirosis and brain fever being reported from different parts of the state. According to data from the Directorate of Health Services (DHS), 24 people have died due to various communicable diseases since June 1. The department has also recorded 12 suspected deaths linked to infectious diseases during the same period, reported PTI. Shigella cases on the rise So far in June, Kerala has reported 38 confirmed Shigella cases and one death. Another 20 suspected cases have also been recorded.  Since January 1, 2026, the state has registered 114 confirmed Shigella infections, 80 suspected cases and two deaths. “However, the number of Shigella cases this year has increased substantially,” a health official said expressing concern over the growing number this year, reported the news agency. Shigella is a bacterial infection that causes diarrhoea, fever and stomach cramps. It usually spreads through contaminated food and water or through contact with infected individuals. In a judgement dated May 29, Justice Neena Bansal Krishna said the continuation of the FIR registered by the Delhi Police’s Economic Offences Wing was “nothing but a gross abuse of the process of law” and once the FIR under predicate offence was quashed, the ED’s Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) in the matter was also liable to be closed. The EOW’s 2020 FIR alleged that PPK Newsclick Studio Pvt Ltd, NewsClick’s parent company, received Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) of ₹9.59 crore from Worldwide Media Holdings LLC USA during the financial year 2018-19, in violation of the foreign investment law, which caused a loss to the government exchequer. Shigellosis cases rise to three in Wayanad; Health Minister reviews situation

One more student tested positive for shigellosis, a bacterial infection caused by shigella, in Wayanad on Tuesday, taking the total number of confirmed cases to three. Following the outbreak among students of Mar Baselios AUP School at Koliyadi, Health Minister K. Muraleedharan visited those undergoing treatment at Taluk Headquarters Hospital, Sulthan Bathery. Mr. Muraleedharan visited various wards and interacted with students, including those undergoing treatment with symptoms of the disease, and their parents, to inquire about their condition. He said there was no cause for concern. The Minister also held discussions with doctors regarding the health condition of those undergoing treatment. Later, chairing a review meeting, Mr. Muraleedharan directed officials to prepare a special protocol for shigella treatment. He also instructed the authorities to conduct stringent inspections at roadside eateries and hotels found to be operating under unhygienic conditions and to ensure strict sanitation standards.
