3,500-kg banned African catfish seized and destroyed in Pune district’s Haveli taluka

In a joint enforcement action against illegal cultivation of banned fish species, officials from the Fisheries Department and Uruli Kanchan Police seized and destroyed nearly 3,500 kg of prohibited African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) from a farm pond in Peth Naigaon village of Haveli taluka in Pune district on Thursday. The operation was carried out after authorities received information about the unauthorised breeding and rearing of the banned exotic fish species. Acting on the tip-off, a joint team led by the Assistant Commissioner of Fisheries, Pune, along with personnel from Uruli Kanchan Police Station, conducted a raid at the site. Researchers have discovered a new species of catfish in the biodiverse northern Western Ghats spanning the states of Goa and Maharashtra. The fish inhabits shallow hill streams where the streambed is made up of sand, pebbles and stones, creating microhabitats that help it hide and forage for food. During field surveys conducted over five years, the researchers encountered the species only twice, underscoring its rarity and the ecological importance of the fragile habitats it occupies. The species was identified through the joint efforts of independent researcher Balaji Vijayakrishnan and researchers Tejas Thackeray and Abhishek Shirke from the Thackeray Wildlife Foundation. Speaking to Mid-Day Abhishek Shirke said, “The newly identified fish belongs to the genus Amblyceps and has been named Amblyceps vayavy.” The name ‘vayavy’ means `northwest` in Marathi and Konkani, referring to the species’ habitat in the northwestern part of the Western Ghats. A significant biodiversity survey conducted in Peru’s Alto Mayo region has led to the discovery of at least 27 new species, including a striking ‘blob-headed’ bristlemouth armored catfish from the genus Chaetostoma. The research, carried out in 2022, highlighted the region’s ecological importance, spanning approximately 780,700 hectares in the San Martín department. The survey documented species from the Andes to the Amazon, emphasising the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect this vibrant ecosystem and its threatened wildlife. Findings of the Survey According to Conservation International, the survey team identified 2,046 species, including 68 types of fish, of which 18 were recorded for the first time in the Alto Mayo basin. A US woman who killed her “best friend” in 2019 after allegedly being catfished by a man who offered her $9 million to commit the murder is speaking out about what led to this point. Denali Brehmer, now 23, shot and killed her so-called best friend Cynthia Hoffman, 19, after forming an online relationship with a man who convinced her he was rich and willing to pay her $9 million to murder a person of her choosing. She was convicted earlier this year and sentenced to 99 years in prison for the 2019 murder, the Alaska Department of Law announced.  According to authorities, Denali Brehmer carried out the killing after Darin Schilmiller, a 21-year-old Indiana man living in his grandparents’ basement, catfished her online and “solicited the murder of Hoffman from Brehmer in Anchorage”. Brehmer enlisted other friends too into the plot and then in June 2019, they carried out the murder of the 19-year-old.
