In 300-Year-Old Odisha Temple, VIP Darshan For Cats

Kendrapara: A priest sits in the cool sanctum sanctorum of a 300-year-old Odisha temple and prays to the resident deity as the VIP devotees – 10 resident cats – wait patiently near a bowl in which they will be served the prasad (offerings). No jostling among crowds or song and music are seen at the Bileikhia Mutt, a rare monastery for cats in Kendrapara district. On a normal day, the cats roam freely or curl up in nooks and corners along the corridors and verandahs, sharing the the temple with the residing deity Lord Madan Mohan Jew and 10 other idols. The temple, named after the Odia word for cat ‘Belei’, completes the prayers, feeds the offerings to the 10 resident cats and what remains is then distributed among devotees. The tradition began around three centuries ago, when King Braja Sundar Deb of the Aul Kingdom visited the monastery and saw hundreds of cats being cared for by the temple priest, per local legend. Deeply moved, he gifted a few acres of land to the …

Tunisia Could Have Been the Birthplace of Today’s Domestic Cats, Reveals New Origin Study

The origin of domestic cats has been a prominent topic amongst researchers. Their emergence has been linked to the Neolithic period, where they accompanied the farmers while spreading across Europe, along with the agricultural adaptation. However, further investigations have been conducted wherein the significance puzzled the archaeologists. Recently, two large-scale investigations were conducted by the University of Rome Tor Vergata and 42 institutions, and another by the University of Exeter and contributors from 37 institutions, pointing out that Tunisia could be the place of the origin of the domestic cat. The Tor Vergata Study on Cats The expert team of researchers from the University of Rome Tor Vergata conducted paleo-genomic analyses, where they analyzed the specimens of cats from 97 archaeological sites across Europe and Anatolia. Likewise, they also took samples from North Africa, Bulgaria, and Italy. According to the study published on bioRxiv titled “The dispersal of domestic cats from Northern Africa and their introduction to Europe over the last two millennia”, the researchers analysed a total of 70 low-coverage ancient genomes, 37 radiocarbon-dated …

World’s most bizarre secret weapons: how pigeons, cats, whales, robotic catfish acted as spies through ages | Life-style News

The death of a spy is rarely newsworthy, due to the secrecy surrounding it. But when a white beluga whale suspected of spying for Moscow was found dead in Norwegian waters in September, the animal soon became a minor celebrity. The whale had been uncovered as a spy in 2019, and is one in a long line of animals which have been used by the intelligence services. Among them was a Soviet programme to train marine animals as spies and assassins, which collapsed in 1991. The US ran similar experiments with animals, some dating back to the 1960s. One of the CIA’s more unusual attempts to use animals as spies was Operation Acoustic Kitty. The idea was to implant a microphone and antenna into the cat and use it to eavesdrop on potentially interesting conversations. The test of the “prototype” went horribly wrong when the cat wandered off and was run over by a taxi, leading to the programme being quickly abandoned. The history of spy pigeons A more successful example was the use of …

Cats can get sick with bird flu, here’s how to protect them

Cats can get sick with bird flu, here’s how to protect them

The death of an Oregon house cat and a pet food recall are raising questions about the ongoing outbreak of bird flu and how people can protect their pets. Cats can also get bird flu. Here’s how to protect them. Bird flu has been spreading for years in wild birds, chickens, turkeys and many other animals. It was first confirmed in U.S. dairy cattle in March. The virus has been causing sporadic, mostly mild illnesses in people in the U.S., and nearly all of those infected worked on dairy or poultry farms. When the virus is found, every bird on a farm is killed to limit the spread of the disease. Oregon health officials traced the cat’s illness to frozen cat food that contained raw turkey. Virus recovered from the recalled pet food and the infected cat matched. Some pet owners feed their animals raw meat, but that can be dangerous, even fatal for the animals, said Dr. Michael Q. Bailey, president-elect of the American Veterinary Medical Association. Cooking meat or pasteurizing raw milk destroys …
