Kerala election 2026: Polls heat up as major fronts step up campaigns and identity politics takes centrestage

As poll campaigning reaches a fever pitch, big names in national politics have landed in Kerala. | Photo Credit: H. Vibhu With barely a week remaining before public campaigning ends for the Kerala Assembly polls 2026, the major political fronts are overhauling their strategies and intensifying their push to win over the electorate for the single-phase polling on April 9. The electoral battle is crystallising as a direct confrontation between the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) and an invigorated Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) struggling to muscle in as a third force in the sweepstakes. Against this backdrop, what began as an election focused on development, inflation, and unemployment has since evolved into something far murkier. Conspiracy theories of backroom deals between rival coalitions and cynical identity politics with communal overtures involving outfits such as the SDPI and Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) are now dominating the fag end of electioneering. As campaigning reaches a fever pitch, big names have landed in the State. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who …

NAJEEB The Drama competition in the HSS category at the State School Arts Festival, held at the Chaldean Syrian Higher Secondary School here on Saturday, featured performances bold in vision and rich in energy. The striking opening play Eravi, staged by National HSS, Kolathur, was set against a tribal backdrop and told the story of a tribal queen who rose against invading forces. Refusing to bow before oppression, Queen Eravi leads her people into resistance. “It is a play against fascist forces,” S. Neelambari, one of the team members, said. The synchronised movements, intense performances, and gripping stage language reflected months of disciplined preparation. Equally compelling was Pokku by St. Mary’s HSS, Edoor. It was a layered narrative on migration and generational change. Blending humour with seriousness in a contemporary theatrical idiom, the play lingered as a thoughtful reminder of journeys …

HIGH drama prevailed on the final day of the campaigning on Sunday in the prestigious Baramati Lok Sabha constituency as two Pawars clashed in a bid to prove their supremacy and acceptability among the Baramatikars. At the end of the day, it seemed like 84-year-old Sharad Pawar had clearly overshadowed his more flamboyant nephew Ajit Pawar, not in words but by his mere presence. The popularity and admiration that he enjoys among the masses was quite palpable, as they gave full rein to their vocal chords while expressing their support to the Maratha strongman. Much before the NCP (S-P) national president arrived at the Lendi Patti ground off Old Morgaon Road in Baramati city, every inch of the space was occupied by citizens who braved the sweltering heat to see and hear him, with many believing that this could be be his last election campaign speech. Not just the ground was choc-a-bloc with people of all ages, even the entire stage was occupied by leaders, party workers, activists, family members and old-time Baramatikars.Sharad Pawar has …
