AI cameras to soon manage Pune traffic with automatic challans: ACP | Pune News

AI-based cameras under the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) will soon play a central role in managing Pune’s traffic, with automatic challans to be issued for violations across nearly 500 locations in the city, Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil said on Sunday. Speaking at the Pune Social Impact Dialogue organised by the Software Exporters Association of Pune (SEAP), Patil said that ITMS will ensure stricter enforcement, as “certainty of punishment” will discourage people from breaking rules, with up to 99% of challans expected to be generated by the system. He explained that Pune’s worsening traffic situation is the result of rapid and unplanned growth, outdated planning, and excessive reliance on private vehicles and that earlier infrastructure projects, such as flyovers, were often designed using limited or outdated data. Citing an example, he said that a bridge planned for 19,000 vehicles is now expected to handle nearly 90,000 vehicles, leading to congestion instead of relief. To address this, authorities are now shifting towards data-driven and evidence-based planning, using real-time inputs from platforms like Google and …

Traffic policemen imposing fines on errant drivers in Hyderabad. | Photo Credit: Nagara Gopal In a first for Hyderabad, traffic police started knocking on the doors of violators with huge stacks of unpaid challans. The Cyberabad police, who started this initiative in May this year, said that they took this initiative to do away with challans pending for years, and to curb repeat offenders. The push also follows a string of serious incidents involving vehicles with unpaid challans this year. Even in the recent Chevella tragedy in which 19 people died, the lorry carried multiple unpaid challans as did the bus involved in Kurnool fire mishap, for violations such as entering no-entry zones, signal jumping and stop-line crossing. The numbers uncovered the sheer scale of the problem. It was found that 24 vehicles had piled up more than 100 challans each, with one of the offenders reaching 162. 5 commercial vehicles have 3,200 pending challans: Data | Latest News Delhi

The Delhi Traffic Police has compiled a list of commercial vehicles with the most pending challans registered against them, with the top five alone accounting for a whopping 3,200 unpaid fines and owing the government a cumulative ₹75 lakh, officers said on Sunday. Of the top five violators, four are from NCR towns. (HT Photo) The list of repeat violators was prepared by the Delhi Traffic Police last month. However, officers said their hands are tied — they cannot cancel the licence of a person who has been challaned only for minor traffic offences, nor can they impound that person’s vehicle. Thus, they said, the list will likely be shared with the concerned state transport department so that action can be taken against them, including the revocation of their licence and/or permit to operate. A wide array of vehicles qualifies for the “commercial” tag in Delhi — cabs, autorickshaws, buses, trucks, and other light, medium and heavy goods carrying vehicles — approximately 1.25 million such vehicles are registered in the Capital, while tens of thousands …

Those with pending challans might see their driving licence get suspended or even confiscated as stricter traffic regulations come into force with the beginning of a new financial year, April 1. The stringent new rules came in the backdrop of the government’s concern over low recovery rates of e-challans. In addition, three challans for red light violations or rough driving within one financial year could also result in a three-month suspension of driving licence. HT has not independently verified the information. The decision reportedly came in the backdrop of the government’s concern over low recovery rates of e-challans, with merely 40 per cent of the fines being paid by citizens. To ensure that drivers comply with the rules, the government is also considering to hike insurance premiums for those with two unpaid challans from the previous year. However, the administration has also considered that …
