Officials and members of the Executive Committee of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) met Giani Raghbir Singh, Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, on Saturday seeking the excommunication of Narain Singh Chaura who opened fire at the Golden Temple in Amritsar in a bid to attack former Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader survived the attack on December 4 as the gunshots fired at him missed the target. Badal was standing guard at the Golden Temple after the Akal Takht – the highest seat of temporal power of the Sikhs – punished him and other party leaders for purported failures during the tenure of the SAD government in Punjab. The petition submitted by the SGPC officials stated that the attack on Sukhbir Badal during his service at the entrance of the Sri Harmandir Sahib caused “profound anguish” to the Sikh community. The shooter, identified as former Khalistani terrorist Narain Singh Chaura, who attempted to shoot Sukhbir Singh Badal at Golden Temple in Amritsar yesterday has been sent to a three-day police custody by an Amritsar court. The attack took place when the former Punjab deputy chief minister was performing the duty of a ‘sewadar’ at the main gate of the Sikh shrine as religious penance for ‘mistakes’ committed by the SAD government in Punjab from 2007 to 2017. Khalistani leader Narain Singh Chaura allegedly opened fire at senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sukhbir Singh Badal inside the premises of the Golden Temple in Amritsar on Wednesday morning when the Akali Dal leader and former Punjab deputy chief minister was on “punishment” guard duty. Chaura, who faces multiple cases under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, is a notorious person who has been jailed multiple times for terrorism-related activities. According to the police, Chaura had crossed over to Pakistan in 1984 and was instrumental in smuggling large consignments of weapons and explosives into Punjab during the initial phase of militancy. While in Pakistan, he allegedly authored a book on guerrilla warfare and “seditious” literature.
