Chembur death: BMC suspends three officers; inquiry panel formed | Mumbai News

4 min readMumbaiJul 1, 2026 09:30 PM IST A day after the tragic incident in Chembur, in which an 11-year-old boy lost his life and four others were injured after a peepal tree fell on a school bus, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) authorities announced the suspension of three officers. Additional Municipal Commissioner Avinash Dhakane told The Indian Express that the suspended officers include an assistant municipal commissioner of M west (MW) ward, which covers Chembur area, an assistant superintendent of gardens at the ward level and an assistant engineer of the roads department. The civic administration also formed a two-member committee headed by the deputy municipal commissioner (engineering) and deputy municipal commissioner (special engineering) to investigate the matter. The panel will carry out a thorough inquiry into the subject and present the findings to Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide by next week. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday, April 30, announced a scheduled water cut across several areas in the eastern suburbs, including Chembur and Ghatkopar, on May 5 and 6, 2026, due to essential maintenance work. According to the official statement issued by the BMC, large parts of M-West Ward covering Maitri Park, Chembur Gaothan, Diamond Garden, Postal Colony, Swastik Park, and Ghatla will face a complete water suspension on Tuesday, May 5. The officials further added that the water supply in these localities will resume on Wednesday, May 6, but at reduced pressure. After authorities arrived, the victims were taken to the Rajawadi Hospital, but all seven were declared dead upon arrival. Local authorities are investigating the incident. Protest by govt hostel students in Mumbai gets support from across state | Mumbai News

A protest started by resident students of Sant Eknath Government Boys’ Hostel in Chembur, run by the Social Justice Department (SJD) of Maharashtra, have crossed thirteen days with no resolution from the government. Students from SJD-run hostels in different parts of the state are now joining from their local level by raising the same issues with local authorities. Students from the Chembur hostel began their protest on February 12 with issues such as inadequate facilities, outdated policy regulations and unpaid stipend. Realising that SJD-run hostels are grappling with the same issues, irrespective of their locations, student residents across the state have extended their support. Advocate Buddhabhushan Rajratna from Ambedkar Students Association, who was also formerly a resident of the Chembur hostel, said, “Students from Satara and Jalgaon have already submitted their memorandum to local authorities whereas students from Pune, Aurangabad and few other places are going to protest in the coming week.
