State warns traders against illegal farm trade, use of chemicals on fruits

State Marketing Minister Jai Kumar Rawal said strict action will be taken against traders, institutions and farmer producer companies found buying or selling agricultural produce without licences. He said complaints had been received from several parts of the state that some traders and companies were carrying out transactions without permission under the Maharashtra Agricultural Produce Marketing law. The Directorate of Marketing has now issued a circular making it clear that no one can trade in agricultural produce without obtaining the required licence from the concerned Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC). The government said licences are compulsory for direct marketing, private markets, farmer-consumer markets and e-trading platforms as well. Traders operating without permission will face legal action, Rawal said. India`s recently concluded Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the European Union is expected to deliver significant gains for several Indian sectors, including textiles, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, agriculture, leather, and marine products, as the EU remains one of India`s largest and most important trading partners. The India-EU FTA, finalised in January 2026 after long negotiations, eliminates tariffs on over 90 per cent of goods traded between the two sides. According to a sectoral analysis by credit rating agency ICRA, the agreement grants India preferential zero-duty access on 97 per cent of EU tariff lines, covering nearly 99.5 per cent of the value of Indian exports, while India will cut or eliminate tariffs on 92 per cent of its tariff lines for EU imports. The textile and apparel sector is expected to be among the biggest beneficiaries. ICRA noted that duty-free access to the EU market will place Indian exporters on par with competitors such as Bangladesh, Vietnam, and Turkey, which previously enjoyed tariff advantages. Two trucks parked along Agra-Mumbai national highway in Madhya Pradesh`s Indore were gutted in a fire on Monday, disrupting traffic on the arterial route, though no one was hurt in the incident, a police official said. The fire broke out near Manpur town, some 50 kilometres from the district headquarters, Deputy Superintendent of Police Umakant Choudhary told PTI. “The blaze started in a truck carrying chemicals used in manufacture of oil paint. The truck behind it was loaded with plastic granules, which intensified the fire. Traffic on the highway was stopped to douse the fire. No one was injured in the incident as the vehicles` drivers and cleaners were not present in them. Both trucks were completely destroyed,” the Deputy SP said. Washington: US President Donald Trump’s administration on Wednesday announced plans to ease limits on the amount of toxic “forever chemicals” allowed in drinking water, reversing what had been hailed as a landmark public health victory. In a statement, the Environmental Protection Agency said it would retain maximum contaminant levels for just two of the most notorious compounds from the PFAS class of chemicals, while removing limits for others also known to pose serious health risks. Researchers tested various household objects made from black plastic to see if they had traces of toxic substances usually found in recycled materials. The study’s lead author Megan Liu, a science and policy manager for US-based environmental advocacy organization Toxic-Free-Future, said 85% of the products tested contained chemicals used as flame retardants. “We purchased 203 black plastic food serviceware items, hair accessories, kitchen utensils, and toys, and screened them for bromine, a chemical element that indicates presence of (the harmful) brominated flame retardants,” Liu told DW. “They then selected the 20 products with the highest levels of bromine, and found flame retardants in 17 of those products.” Why are black plastics harmful? Madhya Pradesh Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya said the fire at the renowned Mahakal Temple in Ujjain on Monday morning may have been caused by chemicals in `gulal`, a coloured powder used in rituals and during Holi. The blaze, which took place in the `garbha griha` (sanctum sanctorum) of the temple at 5:50 am, left 14 priests and `sevaks` (assistants) injured, eight of whom were shifted to the Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences in Indore. “It seems all the injured at SAIMS are out of danger, But they will be under observation for the next 24 hours,” Vijayvargiya told reporters after visiting the health facility. “Every year, Holi is celebrated in Mahakaleshwar Temple by throwing gulal. Gundurao pointed out the risks posed by unsafe food practices. He cited the findings of a recent investigation conducted by health department officials on Cotton Candy and Gobi Manchurian.
