Major accident averted after faulty signal brings trains too close on same track

Railways had recently sent out an alert to audit signalling installations across its network. File | Photo Credit: The Hindu Bureau A major accident was averted in Southern Railway’s Chennai Division after an alert motorman applied the brakes on spotting two trains already stationed ahead on the same track.  The serious safety lapse occurred in the Ambattur–Avadi section on March 5, 2026. A multi-departmental inquiry has been ordered into the incident, official sources told The Hindu on Friday. According to the sources, an Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) suburban train approaching Automatic Signal S192 received a ‘Double Yellow’ aspect, authorising it to proceed with caution. As the train advanced, the motorman noticed two trains standing on the same line within visible distance. Realising the potential danger, he immediately brought the train to a halt just short of the signal, averting what could have been a serious accident. Preliminary inquiries revealed that the signalling system had malfunctioned and displayed an incorrect aspect, allowing the approaching suburban train to proceed despite the track ahead being occupied. Elevated corridor on NH5 likely if T.N. waives GST on construction materials

There remains a glimmer of hope for the construction of a 10.4-km-long elevated corridor from Madhavaram to Nallur toll plaza. Sources in the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said that the project would be revived if the State government waived its portion of the Goods and Sales Tax (GST) for the proposed project.  “Around 60% of the cost would go towards materials, which attract GST and 9% on that is not much in terms of tax. The State government wants this project and so it would be their contribution towards the same. The land acquisition, if any, would be very minimal,” said a source.  In February this year, during a meeting held by the Secretary to Government of India, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways with the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary, the NHAI accepted to take up the elevated corridor project, subject to a waiver of the State’s component of GST. Accordingly, the modalities of implementation were being finalised along with the updation of the DPR, an official source explained.  S. Suresh Babu, president …

Jana Nayagan update: KVN productions to refund distributors after months of uncertainty | Tamil News

3 min readHyderabadJun 5, 2026 12:13 PM IST KVN Productions, the production house behind Jana Nayagan, is planning to refund all distributor advances for Vijay’s final film and release the movie independently once the pending certification and legal hurdles are cleared. Talking to SCREEN, Mohan Suprith, business head of KVN Productions confirmed, “While we are still in talks, we have decided to refund the money to the film distributors. We felt it was unfair to keep them in loop, while we are still waiting for a possible release date.” The decision, reportedly made at the direction of Vijay himself, comes more than five months after the film missed its originally scheduled release date of January 9. Jana Nayagan has been in limbo since then, caught in an unresolved dispute over its Central Board of Film Certification rating. The CBFC’s regional panel initially recommended a UA 16+ certificate for the film, but the final clearance has been stalled. KVN Productions had approached the Madras High Court seeking to expedite the certification process during the release time. …
